WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) ? Frank and Louie the cat was born with two faces, two mouths, two noses, three eyes ? and lots of doubts about his future.

Now, 12 years after Marty Stevens rescued him from being euthanized because of his condition, the exotic blue-eyed rag doll cat is not only thriving, but has also made it into the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records as the longest-surviving member of a group known as Janus cats, named for a Roman god with two faces.

"Every day is kind of a blessing; being 12 and normal life expectancy when they have this condition is one to four days," Stevens said, stroking Frank and Louie's soft fur as he sat on her lap purring. "So, he's ahead of the game; every day I just thank God I still have him."

Frank and Louie's breeder had taken him to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, where Stevens was working at the time, to be euthanized when he was just a day old. Stevens offered to take him home, but experts told her not to get her hopes up.

Janus cats almost never survive, and most have congenital defects, including a cleft palate that makes it difficult for them to nurse and often causes them to slowly starve or get milk in their lungs and die of pneumonia. The condition is the result of a genetic defect that triggers excessive production of a certain kind of protein.

But Frank and Louie did not suffer from most of the common Janus problems. Stevens used feeding tubes to nourish him for three months, hoping that would also save him from the danger of choking on food going down two mouths.

It turned out she didn't have to worry about him choking, because Frank and Louie used just one of his mouths to eat.

"The condition itself is very rare, and I think that the fact that this cat became an adult, a healthy adult, is remarkable," said Dr. Armelle deLaforcade, an associate professor at Cummings and head of the emergency services section.

Colleagues at the veterinary hospital told Stevens that trying to raise Frank and Louie might not be good for him ? or her.

Still, she "stood firm and stood by the cat, and I'm really glad she did because this cat really has fewer problems than many cats that have very normal anatomies," deLaforcade said.

Frank and Louie's two faces have a complicated relationship. Both noses work, but one mouth does not have a lower jaw and isn't connected to his one esophagus, so he can't eat with it. Stevens discovered that only after the cat got an MRI later in life.

The animal can see out of only two of his three eyes. The middle one can't even blink and makes Frank and Louie appear to be staring even when his other eyes are closed.

Frank and Louie does not seem to be bothered by his condition and has developed a friendly personality. The breed is known for its soft and silky fur, docile temperament and penchant for relaxing in a person's arms like a rag doll.

He is "very, very laid back, not afraid of people, very friendly and he's actually more of a dog than a cat," Stevens said. "He walks on a leash, he goes right in the car; he loves car rides."

People often want to touch Frank and Louie's long, luxurious fur while Stevens is out walking him.

"It's funny because people walk up to him thinking it's a nice, fluffy white cat and they're walking up with a big smile on their face to pat him, like, 'Oh, what a beautiful cat' and I see a look of horror come over their faces when they actually see his face," Stevens said, laughing.

Thirty years ago, a cat like Frank and Louie might not have been given a chance to live.

Said deLaforcade: "You can look at a cat like this as either a very strange and bad omen, or you can look at this cat as a miracle."

Doomed satellite landed in Pacific, NASA says (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? Debris from a defunct six-ton NASA science satellite that crashed to Earth on Saturday fell harmlessly in a remote area of the South Pacific Ocean, NASA said on Tuesday.

Experts estimated that as much as 1,100 pounds (495 kg) of debris survived the bus-sized satellite's fiery plunge through the atmosphere, which started at midnight EDT on Saturday (0400 GMT on Sunday).

The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California determined that the U.S. space agency's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean at 14.1 degrees south latitude and 170.2 west longitude, NASA said in a statement.

That location is in Pacific in the rough vicinity of Samoa. The debris was then scattered between 300 miles and 800 miles from the re-entry point, NASA said.

"This location is over a broad, remote ocean area in the Southern Hemisphere, far from any major land mass," NASA said, adding that the agency "is not aware of any possible debris sightings from this geographic area."

Measuring 35 feet long and 15 feet in diameter (10.6 km long and 4.6 km in diameter), UARS was among the largest spacecraft to plummet uncontrollably through the atmosphere.

NASA now plans for the controlled re-entry of large spacecraft, but it did not when UARS was designed.

The 13,000-pound (5,897 kg) satellite was placed into orbit by a space shuttle crew in 1991 to study ozone and other chemicals in Earth's atmosphere. It completed its mission in 2005 and had been slowly losing altitude ever since, pulled by the planet's gravity.

UARS was one of about 20,000 pieces of space debris in orbit around Earth. Something the size of UARS falls back into the atmosphere about once a year.

Bla Bla ? McKinsey Market Research Report: Strategy Development ...

To create a robust business strategy, businesses must follow a strategy development process that starts with a agreed upon understanding of its current situation and existing strategic barriers to growth. The next steps include defining what the future vision of the organization is and then going into the details of planning how to get to that state. In order to understand your strategic challenges, you must begin with a complete, end-to-end understanding of your situation. Business strategy is about value innovation, strategy is about competitive selection, and strategy is about business mobility.

Strategy development has evolved through 5 key stages since the early 1900s. Business strategy development started with a focus on financial planning in the 1950s, moving to sustainable business planning in the 1960s, to strategic planning in the 1970s and ultimately to a focus on strategic management in the present day. Shifts in strategic mindset represent a changing landscape, new business leaders, and emergence of disruptive technologies and changes. Much of corporate strategy is also hinged on ideas in the 1970s, where the core theme was around thinking strategically to out maneuver competition and the business frameworks of alternative strategies, portfolio analysis, and the BCG Growth Share Matrix were developed. In the current day, the strategic development theme is on integrating strategic planning and implementation with a stress on the key concepts of core competencies, strategy planning and execution, and balance scorecard analysis.

Today, there are two primary schools of thought around strategy management. Mintzberg opts for an organization, bottom-ups strategy to drive business strategy development that adheres to organizational configuration. Mintzberg also advocates a transformation of business practices, where management recognizes the need and has the ability to manage top-down business operational operational transformation. In organizational configuration, the organization takes on behaviors based on adoption to contexts.

In the strategy development process, it is noteworthy to point out that your company should conduct rigorous market analysis. There are also several market place evaluation characteristics, including market sizing, pricing changes, product development, market place characteristics, market force structure, and current trends. Understanding what is a market analysis involves both supply analysis and demand analysis, which includes segmentation and segment analysis, understanding consumer buying behavior, and historical analysis. Proper market analysis involves creating the market and the study depth, understanding the core industry issues, and planning for the future. It is important to understand what makes a market unique, such as a high degree of regulation, high industry fragmentation, and importance of R&D. There are a number of market environment evaluation traits, including ones that are socio-demographic, economic, political, technological, and current trends.

A critical tool used in strategic planning is scenario planning. Oftentimes, the scenario planning process is performed in a workshop environment, where decision makers, executives, subject matter experts, and third party consultants, are gathered in a 2-3 day off-site location to decide on various future state scenarios. Scenario planning is also called scenario thinking and scenario analysis. It is used to help businesses plan for and make flexible future estate business plans. An important task in the scenario planning framework is choosing the primary axes of uncertainty after building a 2-axis scenario map.

The way business leaders evaluate and analyze strategy within that of contemporary businesses has been built upon a platform of militant strategists since 400BC when Sun Tzu wrote the Art of War. Sun Tzu preached to know and attack the enemys strategy. In Sun Tzus Art of War, he wrote about several fundamental factors in military strategy and each of these factors relates to a popular concept of business strategy. Sun Tzus thoughts about the factor of terrain, in todays business landscape, translates to markets, industry structures, value propositions, and Porters Five Forces. Sun Tzu spoke about indirect strategies when Sun Tzu proclaimed winning without fighting is the highest of skill on the warfield.

Joseph Bower emphasizes the strategic planning and budgeting processes are in the focus of strategy development. Resource allocation based strategy planning and budgeting is a bottoms up driven way to locating and selection of core business opportunities. Organizational context is made up of governance and the organizational structure, definition of performance metrics and rewards, and managements beliefs and strategic frames. Bower defines strategic intent as the observable and communicated official strategy. Capital market context is also evaluated, which is defined as demands and influence of providers, like banks. In the RAP framework, when market context is discussed, we are evaluating the demands of the largest customers, as well as technological development. Bowers set of beliefs is called the Resource Allocation Process RAP business framework.

Georgia executes Troy Davis after his last pleas fail

Troy Davis was put to death by lethal injection late Wednesday for the 1989 murder of an off-duty police officer, maintaining his innocence until the end after convincing thousands of it, but not the justice system.

Davis was declared dead at 11:08 p.m. EDT, a prison official said.

His execution, which began at 10:53 p.m., came after a three-hour hold while the Supreme Court considered a late request for a stay. In the end the court refused to stop the execution, despite calls for clemency from former President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI and others.

Davis' attorneys say seven of nine key witnesses against him recanted all or parts of their testimony, state and federal judges repeatedly ruled against granting him a new trial.

Troy Anthony Davis

  1. Age: 42

    Hometown: Savannah, Ga.

Sentenced to die for: Aug. 19, 1989, murder of off-duty Savannah, Ga., police officer Mark MacPhail.

Additional info: Maintains his innocence. List of supporters include former President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI, Desmond Tutu.

Media witnesses said that on his death bed, Davis told the family of the slain officer, Mark MacPhail, that he was very sorry for their loss but that he wasn't responsible for his death.

"It's not my fault; I did not have a gun," he said while strapped to a gurney, according to witness Rhonda Cook of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I did not personally kill your son, father, brother," he said, Cook reported.

He asked his family and supporters to "dig deeper" into the case after his death "so you can find the real truth."

"For those about to take my life," he told prison officials, "may God have mercy on your souls. May God bless your souls."

MacPhail's family attending the execution never turned their heads or wavered, said witness John Lewis of WSB radio.

"They just stared at the glass, watching as the execution happened," he said.

Dozens of demonstrators protested outside the Jackson prison, where officers were prepared for any disruptions.

The Supreme Court had received the request for a stay less than an hour before the 7 p.m. ET time set for the execution, then delivered a one-sentence rejection more than three hours after the time had passed.

State officials had waited for the response.

"We are in a delay, waiting for a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court," Peggy Chapman of the Georgia Department of Corrections told NBC News earlier.

The court had no deadline for a decision, and the state was under no obligation to wait, NBC News reported.

Hundreds of Davis supporters had gathered outside the prison in Jackson and lined a nearby highway. Crowds cheered and sang "We Shall Overcome" as news of the lethal-injection delay spread. Police in full riot gear were on hand to deal with any possible disturbance if the execution goes ahead.

But as the minutes, then hours, passed, the crowd dwindled to about 50.

After the execution, the crowd started to clap and sing while police maintained a large presence with riot gear including tear gas, tasers, and hand restraints.

The U.S. Supreme Court's action came after Georgia's Supreme Court had rejected a last appeal by Davis? lawyers. Earlier, a Butts County Superior Court judge also declined to stop the execution.

In their U.S. Supreme Court filing, Davis' attorneys said "substantial constitutional errors" were made when the lower courts denied his claims that "newly available evidence reveals that false, misleading and materially inaccurate information was presented at his capital trial in 1989, rendering the convictions and death sentence fundamentally unreliable," NBC News reported.

The lawyers said they've been struggling to get these claims heard in the lower courts "after having a grueling clemency process."

Davis and his supporters have maintained his innocence. Prosecutors have stood by the case.

Davis' supporters held vigils outside Georgia's death row and as far away as London and Paris. They also tried increasingly frenzied measures, urging prison workers to stay home and even posting a judge's phone number online, hoping people will press him to put a stop to the lethal injection.

"We're trying everything we can do, everything under the law," said Chester Dunham, a civil rights activist and talk show host protesting in Savannah, where MacPhail, 27, was killed.

Outside the Jackson prison that houses Georgia's death row, demonstrators, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, gathered Wednesday afternoon for a prayer rally. As they shouted, "Free Troy Davis!" a man in a red SUV drove by and shouted, "Kill him! Kill him!"

Several dozen people gathered outside the White House to protest the execution. They held signs condemning it as a "lynching" and chanted "Too much doubt" and "What do we want? Justice!"

About 150 people gathered in support of Davis in Paris, many of them carrying signs emblazoned with his face. "Everyone who looks a little bit at the case knows that there is too much doubt to execute him," Nicolas Krameyer of Amnesty International said at the protest.

Davis' execution has been stopped three times since 2007, but on Wednesday the 42-year-old appeared to be out of legal options.

As his last hours ticked away, an upbeat and prayerful Davis turned down an offer for a special last meal as he met with friends, family and supporters. His attorney Stephen Marsh said Davis would have spent part of that time taking a polygraph test if pardons officials had taken his offer seriously.

"He doesn't want to spend three hours away from his family on what could be the last day of his life if it won't make any difference," Marsh said.

Davis' supporters also include a former FBI director, the NAACP, and several conservative figures. Amnesty International says nearly 1 million people have signed a petition on his behalf. The U.S. Supreme Court even gave him an unusual opportunity to prove his innocence in a lower court last year, though the high court itself did not hear the merits of the case.

He was convicted in 1991 of killing MacPhail, who was working as a security guard at the time. MacPhail rushed to the aid of a homeless man who prosecutors said Davis was bashing with a handgun after asking him for a beer. Prosecutors said Davis had a smirk on his face as he shot the officer to death in a Burger King parking lot.

No gun was ever found, but prosecutors say shell casings were linked to an earlier shooting for which Davis was convicted.

Witnesses placed Davis at the crime scene and identified him as the shooter, but several of them have recanted their accounts and some jurors have said they've changed their minds about his guilt. Others have claimed a man who was with Davis that night has told people he actually shot the officer.

Interactive: Troy Davis (on this page)

"Such incredibly flawed eyewitness testimony should never be the basis for an execution," Marsh said. "To execute someone under these circumstances would be unconscionable."

State and federal courts, however, have repeatedly upheld Davis' conviction. A federal judge dismissed the evidence advanced by Davis' lawyers as "largely smoke and mirrors."

"He has had ample time to prove his innocence," said MacPhail's widow, Joan MacPhail-Harris. "And he is not innocent."

Earlier, MacPhail's mother, Anneliese, surrounded by friends and relatives at her Columbus home, was leafing through photos of her son, and in her words "smoking like a steam engine" as she awaited word on whether the execution would proceed tonight.

After she received a call from officials that the execution was carried out, she said, "It is over."

The motion filed Wednesday by Davis' attorneys in Superior Court in Butts County disputed testimony from the expert who linked the shell casings to the earlier shooting involving Davis, and challenged testimony from two witnesses.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which helped lead the charge to stop the execution, had considered asking President Barack Obama to intervene.

Obama cannot grant Davis clemency for a state conviction.

Wednesday evening, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Obama would not get involved, NBC News reported.

"Dating back to his time in the Illinois State Senate, President Obama has worked to ensure accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system ? especially in capital punishment cases. However, it is not appropriate for the President of the United States to weigh in on specific cases like this one, which is a state prosecution."

In Savannah, Davis supporters presented petitions urging the state to spare Davis' life, saying they were signed by 240,000 people. They delivered the petitions to District Attorney Larry Chisolm, though he has said he was powerless to intervene.

Earlier Wednesday, six retired corrections officials, including Allen Ault, retired director of the Georgia Department of Corrections and former warden of the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, where he oversaw executions for the state, sent a letter to Georgia corrections officials and Gov. Nathan Deal asking them to urge the pardons board to reconsider its decision.

"We write to you today with the overwhelming concern that an innocent person could be executed in Georgia tonight," the letter said in part.

Davis' best chance may have come last year, in U.S. Supreme Court-ordered hearing. It was the first time in 50 years that justices had considered a request to grant a new trial for a death row inmate.

The high court set a tough standard for Davis to exonerate himself, ruling his attorneys must "clearly establish" Davis' innocence ? a higher bar to meet than prosecutors having to prove guilt. After the hearing judge ruled in prosecutors' favor, the justices didn't take up the case.

The execution has drew widespread criticism in Europe, where politicians and activists made last-minute pleas for a stay.

Spencer Lawton, the district attorney who secured Davis' conviction in 1991, said he was embarrassed for the judicial system ? not because of the execution, but because it has taken so long to carry out.

"What we have had is a manufactured appearance of doubt which has taken on the quality of legitimate doubt itself. And all of it is exquisitely unfair," said Lawton, who retired as Chatham County's head prosecutor in 2008. "The good news is we live in a civilized society where questions like this are decided based on fact in open and transparent courts of law, and not on street corners."

Furthermore, you will discover no blatant symptoms of the illness, so doctors can?t correctly diagnose the illness until it is considerably advanced. As a result of these aspects, the effectiveness of several conventional remedies are restricted.

When treating mesothelioma, doctors use various therapy selections. Surgery, radiation remedies and chemotherapy have been standard possibilities for slowing the growth of cancerous cells. Doctors coping with mesothelioma need to program an innovative approach of attack to combat this condition. New remedies like angiogenesis, photodynamic and gene therapy hold new hope for victims of mesothelioma everywhere. Based on the state and location of the cancer, doctors will select the most effective course of action for the circumstances. If it is found early sufficient, doctors can prolong the life of the victim, but sadly can not remedy the illness.

The 3 key sorts of malignant mesotheliomas are epithelioid, sarcomatoid and mixed/biphasic. Epithelioid will be the most prevalent type as about 50-70% of all mesothelioma circumstances reported are this kind. Epithelioid also has the most effective probabilities of survival. It affects the internal organs and internal surfaces coverings. Sarcomatoid is actually a significantly far more severe condition as it affects the secondary tissues within the physique including cartilage, muscles, bone and fat. Nonetheless, this cancer is considerably rarer, as it only occurs 7-20% of the time. Mixed/biphasic is getting each forms of the cancer at as soon as, and this makes up 20-35% of the occurrences.

You?ll find 3 targeted locations that mesothelioma can have an effect on. Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleural cavity about the lungs and is responsible for a majority 75% of all situations diagnosed. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for 10-20% of all situations and affects the tissues within the abdomen (particularly the stomach and intestines). Pericardial mesothelioma may be the rarest form which affects the sac and lining surrounding the heart.

UK to extradite 'miracle baby' pastor to Kenya (AP)

LONDON ? British authorities say they are preparing to extradite to Kenya a self-styled archbishop who claimed to help infertile couples produce "miracle babies."

Gilbert Deya faces charges in Kenya of abducting five children from a hospital.

Britain's Home Office said Wednesday that Deya has exhausted all appeals and will be deported.

Deya's wife Mary and two other women were convicted in Kenya four years ago on a charge of abducting a child from a hospital in 2004.

Kenyan police have said the preacher blessed infertile women and sent them to Kenya, purportedly to give birth. The women claimed to have delivered babies after as little as two months and then applied to British authorities to take the children to London.

Gender equality is smart economics: World Bank (Lead)

Washington, Sep 19

Gender equality is smart economics as countries which create better opportunities and conditions for women can raise productivity and improve outcomes for children, the World Bank said Sunday ahead of its annual meeting.

Gender equality can also make institutions more representative and advance development prospects for all, the Washington-based global lender said in its flagship report entitled "World Development Report 2012: Gender Equality and Development".

The report acknowledged that significant progress has been made in narrowing gender gaps in education, health and labour markets over the past 25 years, as disparities between boys and girls in primary education have closed in almost all countries.

In secondary education, these gaps are closing rapidly, and in many countries, especially in Latin America, the Caribbean and East Asia, it is now boys and young men who are disadvantaged, it said.

"We need to achieve gender equality," said World Bank President Robert Zoellick, adding that over the past five years, the bank has provided $65 billion to support girls' education, women's health, as well as women's access to credit, land, agricultural services, jobs and infrastructure.

Going forward, the bank will mainstream its gender work and find other ways to move the agenda forward to capture the full potential of half the world's population, Zoellick said.

"Blocking women and girls from getting the skills and earnings to succeed in a globalised world is not only wrong, but also economically harmful," said Justin Yifu Lin, chief economist and senior vice president of the World Bank.

"Sharing the fruits of growth and globalization equally between men and women is essential to meeting key development goals," added Lin.

The World Bank and its sister agency the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are scheduled to kick off their annual meetings later this month in Washington.

Netflix says it's sorry, then creates new uproar (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? The CEO of Netflix said he was sorry for mishandling a recent price increase that caused customers to cancel the service in droves. But the apology was drowned out by a decision that angered subscribers all over again.

The company will split into two services ? one with an odd new name that offers the familiar discs in red envelopes and another for online streaming of TV shows and movies.

The DVD service will be called Qwikster, a name that is supposed to signify a commitment to fast service but quickly became an object of ridicule Monday on the Internet. The streaming service will keep the Netflix name.

Netflix, which had 24.6 million U.S. subscribers at the end of June and is the nation's largest video subscription service, redefined home entertainment over the past decade with its DVDs by mail. Now it's trying to prepare for the day when watching movies on a disc goes the way of driving to the video store to pick up a VHS tape.

But lately, it has bungled the transition. The company has lost half its market value since July, when it announced that customers who wanted DVDs and streaming had to pay for them separately ? and pay up to 60 percent more.

The decision to rebrand the best-known part of Netflix's business left some experts wondering whether CEO Reed Hastings is losing the touch that established him as an influential figure in technology and entertainment.

Others see the logic in trying to make sure Netflix keeps a thriving business as customers abandon DVDs and shift in greater numbers to beaming movies and TV shows into their living rooms over high-speed Internet connections.

It's going to be a painful transition, as Hastings acknowledged as he cut loose the DVD service.

"It's hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best," Hastings wrote on a Netflix blog. The CEO of the rechristened Qwikster service will be Andy Rendich, a longtime Netflix employee.

Hastings found little sympathy among the more than 10,000 people who commented on the blog posting.

Most of them lambasted him for making life more difficult for about 12 million customers who get both streaming and DVD rentals. Those people will have to visit two websites to make requests and update their billing information.

Other critics questioned the sincerity of his apology for the recent price increase and ripped him for giving DVD rentals a different identity ? and for the name Qwikster in particular.

"It's a really dumb name," said Scott Devine of Burbank, Calif., who dropped the DVD service after the price increase was announced two months ago. "You would think they would choose something that at least had `flick" in the name."

The split may seem like the natural next step to Hastings, but he appears tone deaf to subscribers, said John Tschohl, president of the Service Quality Institute, a consulting service, and author of the book "Achieving Excellence Through Customer Service."

"I don't think Netflix is listening to its customers at all," he said. "They have really blown it."

Columbia Business School marketing professor Brett Gordon thinks Hastings knows exactly what he's doing by starting to bury the DVD business, even if Hastings didn't say it in his blog post.

By the end of September, Netflix figures less than 10 percent of its expected 24 million customers in the U.S. will subscribe to DVD-only plans.

"They don't want the Netflix brand to be damaged by the inevitable death of physical digital goods," Gordon said.

Netflix was a Wall Street star until the jarring July 12 announcement about its prices. Its stock rose from about $50 at the beginning of 2009 to more than $300 in early July.

Since backlash to the price increase, investors have grown disillusioned. Netflix's market value has plummeted 53 percent from its high, wiping out about $8 billion in stockholder wealth. On Monday, the stock shed more than $11 to close at $143.75.

The steepest declines have comes since Netflix warned it expected to have 600,000 fewer subscribers at the end of this month than at the end of June, by far the worst downturn in the company's history.

Netflix's stock has been hit so hard that it made Hastings' apology seem like little more than damage control, Devine said.

In his blog post, Hastings wrote that he "slid into arrogance based upon past success" when he decided to raise prices so dramatically. He emphasized the higher prices were the right thing to do, but said he should have done more to explain them.

Hastings said his biggest fear is that Netflix will be left behind by technological upheaval, like what happened to AOL when people switched from dial-up Internet to widely available broadband, or Borders when readers gravitated to the e-book.

Netflix itself has killed off thousands of video rental stores during the past five years, and it devastated Blockbuster, which once dominated the home-video market and went bankrupt last year.

Hastings began Netflix's evolution in early 2007 when he added Internet video streaming. That option grew in popularity even faster than he anticipated, causing video distributors to demand ever higher licensing fees.

Those expenses are one reason Netflix raised prices. Hastings has promised to use the additional money it gets from its subscribers to stockpile its video streaming library with more content.

Some subscribers are upset by Netflix's inability to renew a contract with Starz Entertainment that included many recently released movies from Walt Disney Co.'s studios. The Starz deal expires in February.

More broadly, Netflix customers have complained that its TV and movie titles available for streaming pale next to its menu of more than 100,000 DVD titles. And they have other places to turn for streaming entertainment ? Amazon.com, iTunes and Hulu, among others.

In Monday's blog post, Hastings wrote that Netflix will make "substantial" additions during the next few months.

Michele Lucas of Denver is among the Netflix subscribers who think its streaming library is already losing its appeal. Her family pays only for streaming now. They stopped renting DVDs from Netflix after the price increase.

"We sit down at night and go through and we have a really hard time finding a movie to watch," Lucas said.

Spinning off the DVD services will also allow Netflix to provide studios with a clearer idea of how many people are streaming their content. That could be critical as it negotiates future licensing deals.

In addition to the split, Netflix will expand into an area Hastings had steadfastly resisted ? video game rentals. Adding it to Qwikster may not make investors happy, though, because video games are more expensive and have a shorter shelf life than DVDs.

But video-game availability could win back alienated subscribers. Devine said he might sign up for Qwikster if the selection is good enough. Hastings seems confident he won't be the only one.

"Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your trust," Hastings wrote on the blog and a mass email to subscribers. "We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than words. But words help people to understand actions."

HP Pavilion p7-1030

The HP Pavilion p7-1030 ($580 street) is an entry-level/mid-range desktop PC, with the kind of parts and performance normally seen in higher-priced desktops. The p7-1030's Intel Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM may not offer professional-grade multimedia or gaming muscle, but it's a great system for the household, especially if you're looking to replace a six- or seven-year-old system.

Design and Features
The p7-1030 is a mid-tower PC with a black aluminum chassis and a plastic front panel. The panel has the same glossy black finish we've seen on other entry-level desktops from HP, like the HP Pavilion p7-1047cb ($799 list, 4 stars). The front panel has a sliding cover that hides two USB 2.0 ports and headphone and microphone jacks. At the top of the panel, there's a multimedia card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro, xD, and Compact Flash), as well as the power button. Below the card reader is a DVD +/- RW drive. A second 5.25-inch drive bay sits just below it, empty, and ready for an upgrade. On the back of the tower there are four additional USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and three audio jacks: microphone in, audio-in, and audio-out.

The p7-1030 offers VGA and DVI video outputs, for hooking the desktop up to an external monitor or display?you could even utilize both outputs simultaneously for a dual-monitor setup. You won't be able to use your HDTV as a monitor, though, as there's no HDMI connection available. This exemption is usually the case when vendors want to keep the cost of a system low. Though it may not come with a monitor, the p7-1030 does include a wired USB keyboard and wired optical mouse. The keyboard is surprisingly comfortable, if perhaps on the mushy side, and its low-profile design is attractive. The mouse is also passable for a bundled device, but you'll want to pick up a new keyboard and mouse, if only to switch to something wireless that won't take up two of the six available USB ports.

Internally, the p7-1030 comes equipped with a spacious 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive, which is the same size and speed of the drive found in the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaCentre K330-11691AU ($599.99 list, 4 stars). A PCIe Mini card provides 802.11n Wi-Fi, which means you won't have to awkwardly find a place near your router or run long Ethernet cables to connect to the Web. There's a little room to grow in this mid-tower chassis. In addition to the aforementioned unoccupied 5.25-inch drive bay, you will also find one available PCI Express x16 slot and three open PCI Express x1 slots. A 250-watt power supply means you'll be limited to adding an entry-level graphics card, but even something as basic as the AMD Radeon HD 6450 would provide an improvement in terms of graphics and gaming capability. Because the system comes with 8GB of DDR3 memory, which occupies both DIMM slots, upgrading memory will mean removing at least one of the memory sticks. That said, it's hard to think of you needing more than 8GB at this point.

The p7-1030 comes with several programs pre-installed on the hard drive. Some of these are useful, like a starter version of Microsoft Office 2010, a 30-day trial for Norton Online Backup, and a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2011, but we've seen longer trial periods on competing systems, like the 90-day trial on the Lenovo K330-11691AU. The p7-1030 also comes with HP LinkUp, a program that lets you access other Windows 7 computers on the same local network. Even computers from other manufacturers can download the LinkUp software to share files. It's like having your own local cloud. Desktop links to websites like Netflix and Hulu aren't a problem, but you may be irritated by the multiple screen reading programs from Blio, Kobo, PDF Complete, and Zinio. You'll definitely want to remove extras like toolbars from Bing and Google.

Performance
HP Pavilion p7-1030 The p7-1030 is outfitted with a 3.1GHz dual-core Intel Core i3-2100 processor, which behaves like a quad-core CPU thanks to Intel's Hyper-Threading technology. Paired with 8GB of memory, twice that of the Dell Inspiron i620-228NBK ($479.99 list, 4 stars), the p7-1030 scored 2,536 points in PCMark 7 performance tests, outpacing the Dell i620-228NBK by 241 points. . In Cinebench R11.5 tests, the p7-1030 matched the speeds produced by other systems with the same processor, like the Dell i620-228NBK (2.99) and Lenovo K330-11691AU (2.98). It was, however, left behind by the Core i5-equipped HP p7-1047cb (4.15) and Asus Essentio CM1730-05 ($569.99, 3 stars) (5.19) with its six-core AMD processor.

The p7-1030 is also a capable desktop when it comes to media creation. In our Handbrake test, it finished encoding our video file in 1 minute 40 seconds, whereas the AMD-equipped Asus CM1730-05 took over 2 minutes to complete the task (2:03). The Dell i620-228NBK, on the other hand, just missed the 1:40 mark by 2 seconds. The p7-1030 finished Photoshop CS5 in 3:46. The only comparative system to produce better scores was the Core i5-equipped HP p7-1047cb, which produced times of 1:29 in Handbrake and 3:31 in Photoshop.

The p7-1030's integrated Intel graphics won't let you get too far in terms of 3D gaming; for the heavy lifting, a dedicated graphics card is necessary. The desktop wouldn't even run our 3DMark 11 graphics benchmark test, and without support for DirectX 11, it wouldn't run our Lost Planet 2 test either. The only test we could run was Crysis (DirectX 10), which scored an unplayable 13 frames per second at medium resolution and detail settings. You'll have to upgrade to a discrete graphics card to play anything more demanding than World of Warcraft at low settings.

As entry-level systems go, the HP Pavilion p7-1030 offers a surprisingly potent collection of hardware, with processing power and storage space that should satisfy entry-level shoppers. Features like 1TB of storage space and a full-fledged Intel Core i3 processor make it a compelling choice for anyone on a budget. Shoppers can buy it with confidence, but bargain hunters will note that the HP Pavilion p7-1047cb includes a monitor, and the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron i620-228NBK offers a similar package for about $100 less.

  • This made me throw up in my mouth a little. After seeing up here in Canada how people have been manipulated by someone claiming to have cancer. I can only imagine how all the people who donated to help this little boy are feeling about his mother right now. What a shameful, selfish act. I understand that gambling is an addiction but choosing it over your dying child is just downright disgusting.

Nevertheless, relocating or leaving has long been a major problem for most people, because there is simply not enough information about moving techniques such as moving containers, moving pods, storage pods, etc. doing the rounds in public circles. Earlier, the knowledge of these kind of techniques was only accessible to the big organizations. But, even now individuals have accessibility to these types of strategies. This makes sure that the objects stored inside them don?t break and also the wear and tear is lessened. Since it gets difficult to handle moving containers all on your own, solutions of packing and moving organizations are recommended.

In these situations you are recommended to make use of storage pods instead of moving containers or moving pods, although these terms are frequently used interchangeably. These pods would provide you space for storing substantial quantity of domestic goods in a small place. These can be of use when you might be redesigning your house or when you simply want to make room for some new furniture in the house.

It is possible to just load these pods on the back of the truck and relocating it over long distances however, you have the choice of moving pods specifically for this purpose. (AP) ? Greece is an "integral" part of the eurozone, the leaders of Greece, France and Germany said in an emergency teleconference Wednesday night that aimed to calm markets and temper talk of an imminent default by Greece.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy also stressed to Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou "that it is more indispensable than ever to fully implement the decisions adopted July 21" by the eurozone leaders "to ensure the stability of the eurozone," the French president's office said in a statement.

Fears that Greece was heading rapidly towards a chaotic default ? and the idea that it should potentially leave the euro and return to its own currency ? have roiled markets for days, both across the 17-nation eurozone and globally.

"In the face of the extensive rumbas of the last few days, it was stressed by all that Greece is an integral part of the eurozone," government spokesman Elias Mossialos said after the teleconference.

The main fear of a Greek bankruptcy is that it could destabilize other financially troubled European countries such as Portugal, Ireland, Spain or Italy. It would also affect banks, many of which are large holders of Greek government bonds. Moody's on Wednesday downgraded the credit ratings of two French banks, Societe Generale and Credit Agricole.

Merkel and Sarkozy pressed the Greek leader on the "importance they attach to the strict and effective implementation of the Greek economic redressment program," statements issued in Paris and Berlin said.

Sarkozy's office said Papandreou "confirmed his absolute determination to take all measures necessary to implement the ensemble of commitments made." The Greek reforms "are indispensable for the Greek economy to find the path of sustainable and balanced growth."

The euro ticked up by a less than penny to $1.37 on news of the completion of the talks.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who is due to meet with eurozone finance ministers in Poland on Friday, said Europe's leaders know they have "been behind the curve." Speaking on American news channel CNBC, he also sought to soothe investors, claiming the eurozone governments understood the severity of the situation and have the financial firepower "to do what it takes to hold this thing together."

Greece currently relies on funds from last year's euro110 billion ($150 billion) international bailout to service its debt and pay salaries and pensions. But the lifeline could be cut if the country continues to miss fiscal and reform targets.

Sticking to its commitments "is the precondition for the payment of future tranches of the program," Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement.

The quarterly payout depends on reviews by Greece's international debt inspectors ? the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund, known as the troika.

The next batch worth euro8 billion ($11 billion) is due in late September, but there were fears the troika would not approve its disbursement after the debt inspectors suspended their review earlier this month. They are due to return to Athens in coming days. Without the next installment, the country has enough cash to keep it going only until mid-October.

Greece's international creditors have become increasingly frustrated by the slow pace of reforms, with the country falling behind on a number of targets, including a massive privatization drive promised since February but which has made little gains to date.

Mossialos said his country was "determined to meet all its commitments to its partners, so ensuring the full implementation of the support program."

Extra austerity measures announced in recent days, including a new property tax, will ensure that Greece achieves its fiscal targets this year and next year, and will lead to the country posting primary growth, Mossialos said. Greece currently is posting a primary deficit, which means it is spending more than it makes even before interest rates on outstanding debt is taken into account.

Many investors have been convinced Greece will not be able to fix its public finances under its current economic plans. Interest rates on the country's 10-year government bonds soared to new record highs in recent days, hitting the alarming level of 25.3 percent on Wednesday, more than 23 points higher than the German equivalent.

Merkel spoke out earlier this week to calm the market and distance herself from her vice chancellor, and others who suggested a Greek bankruptcy was possible.

"We are confronted with the most serious challenge of a generation...," European Union Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. "This is a fight for the economic and political future of Europe. This is a fight for what Europe represents in the world. This is a fight for European integration itself."

Europe's big trading partners ? the U.S. and China ? have made clear they want the crisis contained.

China's Premier Wen Jiabao said European countries needed to tackle their debt problems and make changes to help restore global financial stability and steady economic growth. Beijing has shown interest in helping financially troubled European countries by investing or buying their bonds.

"Countries must first put their own house in order," Wen said.
