Energy Drinks Outsell Bottled Water - Food Product Design

TROY, Mich.?As noted in the recently published Beverage Industry 2012 State of the Industry report, for the first time, energy drinks have outsold bottled water (for the 52 weeks ending April 15 in U.S. supermarkets, drug, gas, convenience and mass merchandise retailers, excluding Walmart, per SymphonyIRI Group). During that period, energy drinks garnered more than $6.9 billion in sales for a 19.4% increase over the previous year; bottled water saw $6.7 billion in sales for a 3.4% increase.

Red Bull remains the top seller in the category, with nearly 40% market share for a total of $2.8 billion in sales. A recent addition to the line is Red Bull Total Zero, a slight reformulation of Red Bull Sugar Free (Total Zero is calorie-free while Sugar Free has 13 calories). In addition to the caloric difference (likely achieved via the addition of sucralose to the sweetener mix), Total Zero has slightly more caffeine (3 mg more in the 8.4-oz. can) and a slightly different flavor.

Both Monster Energy and Rockstar are starting to target the recovery market. Monster Rehab uses a tagline of ?refresh, revive, rehydrate,? with one version (Protean) containing 15 grams of protein per can. Rockstar Recovery seeks to provide ?energy + hydration? in a low-calorie beverage enhanced with electrolytes.

The Beverage Industry report notes that emerging categories in energy include natural options. Jamba Juice, Campbell?s Soup (via its V8 line) and Starbucks carrying ?natural? energy lines.

Energy shots also continue to perform well. That segment is dominated by 5-Hour Energy (Living Essentials, LLC), which captured over 90% of the market. However, more companies, including Monster, with its concentrated 5-oz. M3 product, continue to enter this segment.

For more insight into the energy drink market, see ?The Next Generation of Energy? on the Food Product Design website, which focuses on the recent ?natural? introductions from Jamba Juice and Starbucks.

When a University of Washington researcher listened to the audio picked up by a recording device that spent a year in the icy waters off the east coast of Greenland, she was stunned at what she heard: whales singing a remarkable variety of songs nearly constantly for five wintertime months.

Kate Stafford, an oceanographer with UW's Applied Physics Lab, set out to find if any endangered bowhead whales passed through the Fram Strait, an inhospitable, ice-covered stretch of sea between Greenland and the northern islands of Norway. Only around 40 sightings of bowhead whales, which were hunted almost to extinction, have been reported there since the 1970s.

Stafford and colleagues put two hydrophones, or underwater microphones, on moorings attached to the seafloor in Fram Strait, leaving them there for as long as the batteries would last: nearly a year. Since the population of bowhead whales likely to pass through was thought to number in the tens, they didn't anticipate much interesting data.

"We hoped to record a few little grunts and moans," Stafford said. "We were not expecting to get five months of straight singing."

Not only did they record singing nearly every hour of the day and night, they picked up more than 60 unique songs.

A paper detailing their discoveries appears Tuesday (July 31) as the feature article in Endangered Species Research and is openly accessible online.

The variety of tunes was so surprising that the researchers compared the whales' song catalog to that of birds. "Whether individual singers display one, multiple or even all call types, the size of the song repertoire for bowheads in 2008-2009 is remarkable and more closely approaches that of songbirds than other whales," they wrote in the report.

They have yet to learn why the whales sang so consistently last year.

Scientists believe that bowhead whale song comes from males during mating season. In most other kinds of whales, individuals either sing the same song their whole lives or all members of a population sing the season's same popular tune. If bowheads are like the former, that would mean more than 60 males were in the Fram Strait. If the population is evenly split between males and females, there could have been more than 100 whales -- far more than anyone thought comprised this population.

With further study, the scientists instead could discover that individual bowhead whales have a repertoire of songs that they sing during a season. That would be equally interesting because it would make the bowheads the only known whales to sing a variety of songs in the same season.

The findings also hint at the possibility of a rebound in bowhead whales.

"If this is a breeding ground, it would be spectacular," said Stafford. "For such a critically endangered species, it's really important to know that there's a reproductively active portion of the population."

In addition, since the whales are difficult to study given their year-round residence in the Arctic, virtually nothing was known about where they spend their winters. The research offers a clue about the whales' migration path.

Only a handful of bowhead whale populations remain. The largest historic population, which includes the individuals studied for this report, once possibly numbered more than 30,000 members but was hunted to near-extinction from the 1600s through the 1800s. Commercial whaling reduced bowhead whale populations in other regions as well; combined, the four remaining populations are thought to number fewer than 10,000 members.

Bowhead whales are massive creatures. They grow to over 60 feet long, may live to 200 years old and can weigh 200,000 pounds. They use their huge skulls to break through ice as thick as 1.5 feet.

Bowhead whale song is unique in that the whales appear to sing with "two voices," simultaneously producing high- and low-frequency sounds. The whales sometimes repeat the same tune for hours at a time.

Stafford and her colleagues deployed the two hydrophones 60 miles apart. They made 2,144 hours of simultaneous recordings from September 2008 through July 2009. In order to conserve battery power and take recordings for a longer period of time, the hydrophones worked for nine minutes out of every half hour.

The hydrophone in the west, covered in dense ice and in colder water, picked up far more singing than the one in the east, where there was spotty ice coverage and warmer water. The greatest frequency of song occurred in the darkest, coldest period.

"It's clear there's a habitat preference," Stafford said. The thick canopy of ice may provide better acoustics than the loose pack ice and therefore might be favored by singing whales, she said.

"As Arctic sea ice declines, there may be some places like this that are important to protect in order to preserve a breeding ground for the bowhead whales," Stafford said.

To answer new questions that the data opens up including how many whales make up this North Atlantic population Stafford hopes to do additional study.

Selecting the Right Dallas Commercial Real Estate for your ...

Selecting the right Dallas commercial real estate is critical to your company?s success. Any mistake could end up costing you thousands of dollars and disrupt the operation of your business.

Tips to follow when considering commercial property

Making the search process as efficient as possible will save you time and money. When evaluating a property, you should:

  • Come prepared with a street map, calculator, notepad and tape measure
  • Consider the outward appearance
  • Check for defects
  • Evaluate security

Estimate improvements

It is likely that any space will require improvements to make the space meet your company?s unique needs. Determine how difficult and expensive it will be to fix any problems and customize the space to meet those needs.

Consider zoning compliance issues

Specific zoning ordinances can drastically impact your ability to use the space. The landlord and/or the broker should be familiar with how the property is zoned.

Consider licenses or permits

Licenses and permits are not the same. Zoning laws dictate where a business can operate, while licenses and permits control if they can go into operation. You need to find out how long any licenses and permits will take before committing to a space.

Review any agreement carefully

It is critical that you obtain and carefully review any commercial lease or purchase agreements before signing. An experienced commercial attorney can help you understand all the nuances of your agreement.

The team at the Ferguson Law Group has helped many business owners, who are in the process of purchasing or leasing commercial real estate. We have drafted and reviewed countless commercial agreements and can help you negotiate favorable terms for your business.

If you are looking to buy a business, you should call one of our Dallas commercial attorneys at the Ferguson Law Group at (972) 378-9111 today.

Microsoft admits Surface may trigger OEM hostility

Microsoft yesterday confirmed what most analysts and company watchers had concluded last month when the firm unveiled its own tablet, that it risks alienating the computer makers which account for the bulk of Windows sales.

In a document submitted Thursday to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Microsoft acknowledged the potential problem.

"Our Surface devices will compete with products made by our OEM partners, which may affect their commitment to our platform," Microsoft said in the 10-K filed for the second calendar quarter of 2012.

The New York Times' Bits blog first reported on Microsoft's SEC filing.

The statement appeared in the section dedicated to risk factors, where Microsoft also noted that smartphones and tablets - device categories dominated by rivals Google and Apple - threatened its business.

"Users may increasingly turn to these devices to perform functions that would have been performed by personal computers in the past," the filing stated. "Even if many users view these devices as complementary to a personal computer, the prevalence of these devices may make it more difficult to attract applications developers to our platforms."

It was the first time Microsoft described the competitive hazards of mobile devices in such blunt language.

Some might see Microsoft's statement as an after-the-fact admission of reality.

Although Microsoft has publicly sidestepped the chance that the Surface might antagonize OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), analysts assumed as much almost immediately.

How OEMs will react, however, has remained mostly a mystery.

On the day Microsoft unveiled the Surface, Carolina Milanesi of Gartner said, "With Surface, Microsoft has just made it even harder for every ODM [original design manufacturer) out there to compete in the tablet market - except for Apple, that is."

But other analysts, like IDC's Tom Mainelli, said an estrangement was unlikely. "Partners aren't going anywhere," said Mainelli in a June interview. "Most of them have tried Android tablets, but without any success. So although this might irritate them, Microsoft knows that [the OEMs] need them."

In fact, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has continued to praise OEMs and their role rather than to admit any fear that they may shun either Windows or the Windows tablet market because of the Surface.

At the Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Toronto two weeks ago, Forbes publisher Rich Karlsgaard conducted a staged interview with Ballmer where the chief executive claimed Surface was simply a "design point," or guide for OEMs, not a replacement for what they might design and sell themselves.

"Surface is just a design point. It will have a distinct place in what's a broad Windows ecosystem," Ballmer said. "And the importance of the thousands of partners that we have that design and produce Windows computers will not diminish."

Ballmer said the company "may sell a few million" Surface tablets, but did not put that into a timespan context.

Family fair, er, shower! | Square Piece

For anyone who missed your local county fair this summer, you should have been at our family baby shower yesterday!

Goodness!

There were games, prizes and even a moon bounce!

Look at this prize table! ?(Mmmhmm, might wanna think twice about being anti-baby shower games!)

My mother-in-law, Donna, has spent months pouring over every detail of this shower, from the center pieces to the food to the balloons to the ? well, everything! ?She even made lily balls to hang from the ceiling!

Brian and I made out like bandits! ?And can I just say something? ?I LOVED having Brian with me! ?How fun to discover all these baby goodies with my baby?s daddy! ?He admitted to not knowing what a few things were.

For instance, we had to teach Brian that these are for babies to chew and suck on things like fruit without choking or accidentally swallowing the food whole:

His most embarrassing moment might have been when we opened milk trays. ?I was super excited to get these because the breast milk can be frozen in cylindrical shapes to easily plop into a bottle and then thaw.

While we were both touched especially by the handmade gifts, Brian made a point to mention each one of them on our drive back home. ?He was so grateful for the thoughtfulness of others. ?It?s sweet when people take the time to craft their own creative gifts!

Something a bit unusual that I was thrilled to receive were these bumper slats by Oliver B. ?Bumpers in cribs are poo-pooed these days for fear of suffocation. ?It?s recommended that bumpers be breathable, so I discovered these and fell in love with them. ?Aren?t they pretty?

(No, that?s not our crib. ?We?ve got some major organizing to do before I?m that far ahead!)

Bennett?s getting a good head start on a pretty adorable wardrobe. ?(Watch out, ladies!) ?At one point, I was holding the teeniest onesie and was shocked to realize that it was for a three month old! ?They come smaller than that?!

(Give me time, I?m learning.)

Just so ya know, on the left is Brian?s dad, Lee, and on the right is his mom, Donna. ?(And, of course, at the bottom is our little girl, Esther.) ?(By the way, I plan on wearing that dress as many times as I can while it still fits? so you might see it again!)

Now that the dust has settled and I?m digging back through the loot, another idiosyncrasy of mine has been unearthed: I love saving tissue paper, smoothing it back out and folding it nicely. ?If I were a tree, I think that given my options I?d like to be headed towards a life of tissue paper. ?It?s so cheerful. ?(Do you save tissue paper?)

And in other good news, if you remember my story of Dorothy from the Thieves? Christmas, time has favored me and she?s completely forgotten who I am!

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE SHOWER! ?We are immensely blessed to have you celebrating Bennett?s arrival with us! ?I really don?t know how we?d manage without the generosity of our friends and family.

Pattana Blog Attaching Wood To Concrete

A very important tip is to use the right tool for each method. When you're dealing with concrete and masonry, you're obviously dealing with extremely hard material. Woodworking hammers are too light and steel drill bits too soft. The concrete is also brittle. Hard sharp chips are likely to fly out as you work on it, so always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.Nails. Nailing wood directly to concrete is probably the simplest, quickest and cheapest method. Unfortunately, once driven, these nails may jar loose from a few hammer blows to the side of the board. So, they are better for temporary fastening. You'll usually find two types of special nails at the hardware store, cut nails and hardened concrete nails. Drive nails with a 2- to 4-lb. hammer. Actually, it's very hard to drive nails into cured (hardened) concrete, even with a 4-lb. hammer. They work best in concrete that's only cured for a few days.Nails can be quite effective in mortar joints, however. Mortar is softer than either the concrete block or brick, and it holds nails fairly well. For best results, drive them right along the joint edge. And here's a professional tip: for improved holding power, run a bead of glue along the backside of your wood before nailing it up.Predrilled Fasteners. There is a family of fasteners that can be driven into a predrilled hole. These not only fasten wood to concrete, but will fasten just about anything else to concrete as well. They install easily, simply drill through the wood and into the concrete and drive the fastener.Drilling the hole is the only difficult part. Use a carbide tip bit. Because these holes are relatively small, your standard 1/4-inch or 3/8 inch power drill can do an adequate job, although each hole may take several minutes to bore. A hammer drill, however, will drill your hole in a matter of seconds. A hammer drill is expensive, but they can be rented. If you have a lot of holes to drill, they'll save a lot of time. It's a good idea to glue your wood to the concrete or masonry with this system as well, especially when using screws. Once screws are jarred loose, they may not retighten.Expansion Fasteners. These fasteners are simple, effective and can carry a heavy load. They may be retightened should they be jarred loose.Because they require a larger hole, you really need a hammer drill to bore the concrete. If you can't buy, borrow or rent one, try boring a 1/8 inch hole first with a carbide bit. Then use progressively larger carbide bits until you reach the proper size.Buy these fasteners long enough to wedge into the concrete as deep as the wood is thick. Drill your hole an extra 1/4 inch deep, since the bolt draws back slightly when tightened.Power Fasteners. These are extremely fast, powerful and dangerous. They are primarily professional tools which any untrained homeowner should steer clear of until they fully understanding the safety precautions. With power fasteners you can quickly nail into just about any concrete or masonry surface. Both the air and the power-actuated systems drive hardened nails through the wood and solidly into the concrete in one shot. Flying metal, wood or concrete are certain hazards, so eye protection is essential.Glue. Over the past ten years construction adhesives have improved and become more specialized. You can securely glue just about anything to a wall now. Since glued wood must be held tightly in place until the glue sets, it's handy to use an adhesive with another fastening system for mutual reinforcement; the glue dampens the vibration and jarring that may weaken the fasteners, and the fasteners hold the wood tightly until the glue sets.Proper preparation ensures a good glue bond. Be sure the wood and the concrete surfaces are clean and dry. Loose paint, surface chalking or moisture will cause the bond to release. When working with a very rough surface, apply a generous bead to bridge the wider gaps between the wood and concrete.

Spain Decides to Bring Aid workers from the ... - Morocco World News

By Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Tinjedad, Morocco, July 29, 2012

Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spain Foreign Minister, announced that Spain began on Sunday repatriating all of its aid workers and three other foreign nationals from the Tindouf camps in western Algeria, because of ?serious indications of the growing insecurity? and the possibility of launching terrorist acts against foreign nationals.

The Foreign Minister confirmed in a press conference that 12 Spaniards, two French nationals and an Italian are expected to land in Torrejon military air base in Madrid early Sunday while two aid workers, a Spaniard and a Peruvian, have already returned to Spain by their personal means.

The Spanish government has already warned their Spaniard nationals last year not to go to Tindouf out of fear of the growing insecurity and kidnapping in these areas by the mercenaries. It called for its nationals to cancel all their expected trips to the Sahara regions because of the lack of security measures to protect foreigners.

According to the Spanish Foreign Minister, the decision of repatriating all aid workers had been taken after reviewing ?well-founded evidence of a serious increase in insecurity in the region.?

Ten days ago, the Tawhid and Jihad ? split from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb- which is active in the territory of Azawad, northern Mali, released three hostages ? Spaniards Enric Gonyalons , Ainhoa Fernandez del Rincon and Italian Rossella Urru- who were kidnapped in the heart of Tindouf camps in southwest Algeria on 23 October last year.

In the silence of the international community, these Tindouf camps remain a safe haven for many transnational terrorist networks, gangs of smugglers, and weapon and drug dealers that pose a serious threat on the neighboring countries.

Luxury Real Estate: Real Estate and property personales-inmobiliaria

Each transaction has its own housing property real estate and personal Property in the South of France. It is also possible for the property privately owned and privately owned, to be real.

Valbonne real estate and improvements are included. In most cases, this is also what will be deemed not to move, or fixed to the ground; This can naturally or humans. Here are some examples that are often referred to and considered real estate: land, houses, trees, rivers, wells, treatment for Windows and accessories, to name a few.

South of France property for sale is almost everything that is not real. For example, plants may be real or personal, but they are in a pot would be privately owned. At the home of all things that are not considered as accessories as well as personal and often do they not included in the sales contract. But there are always exceptions to this rule and everything is negotiable. The talks will cover several times a few remaining private property in the House at the end of the transaction, such as furniture.

Advice to owners who are considering listing your home for sale that a device, such as Your valuable lamp hanging over the dining table will translate into sales, if not otherwise specified in the list or the housing sales agreement contract. All negotiations, it is important to be educated or hire an agent who is well versed in all aspects of real estate. Reinforcement is the fact that it is set on the property in such a way that the removal will remove a part of the property.

It is important to note that if either the law is very strict on what personal and real, something that is non-negotiable. The most important thing is that the sellers and listing agents can do so if in doubt, delete the item to send a valid real estate contract. As agreed upon by both parties prior to closing the transaction, there is no need to worry.

This is an area of real roots, which do not always clearly explained for buyers and sellers, and you can add unnecessary tension between buyers and sellers, as well as additional stress to the agents and other third parties. It's always easy to see examples of real estate and moving goods to buyers and sellers in the beginning of the relationship.

Decoupling Intimacy and Commitment | The Badger Hut

Infantry, the star of my last post?for his comments on ?beta hate,? left a comment there?about the risk of habituating into an intimacy-averse mindset:

Something I?d like to see you talk about it is the way that a long term dedication to game, abundance mentality and ?not chasing? can lead to intimacy avoidance. Back in my blue pill days I always used to wonder about guys with ?commitment issues? and why they would ever want to cut away from getting close to a girl. Now I know why.

If you get close to a girl and feel that you don?t have the ?upper hand? in your relationship, you reflexively pull back and try to cut ties to avoid oneitis. The girl must think ?he really likes me, so why did he disappear??.

It?s one of those long term issues that I?ve become aware of recently and its only really a problem if you got into game to eventually attract a woman for a long term partnership (like me). When you?ve spent so long training yourself to cut away, how can you really get close to someone?

I?m not here to blow smoke up anybody?s ass, so I?ll be honest ? this is an occupational hazard of getting into the game.

You do need to look at this as a complete tradeoff ? in betaland, you have a desire for emotional comfort and intimacy and an almost uncontrollable urge to seek it out, yet exactly because of those factors you cannot get it and you go uncomforted by the woman?s touch. In alphaland, you?ve conditioned yourself to suppress those desires and urges, but you are in a position to attract women to meet your needs.

This is not a doomsday scenario, as plenty of guys get on the game train and hop back off when they?ve attracted a woman worth keeping and built enough skill to be confident they can keep her.?(Regular commenter Mike C is one of them, who left the operational scene very quickly when he decided the woman he was with was of high quality and worth his investment.)

If you?re paying attention, your next question is likely to be, but why??Why is their a dichotomous split between no emotion (or faking emotion) and going overboard and scaring the gals away?

The thoughts here give prose to a number of concepts I?ve been formulating as I?ve taken a deep analytical look at today?s sexual marketplace and in particular its sexually detached hookup subculture. I have detailed thoughts on the female side of the predicament, but in keeping with Infantry?s concern I?m going to stick to the guys for the moment.

Commented Wudang got my neurons going with his comment to Infantry:

?this post by Xsplat for good thinking on intimacy and closeness. Men need to learn to feel strongly without crumbling.?

Xsplat?s post is a fantastic riff on exactly what it says it is ? that you don?t have to deny your intimate side and be Mr. Robot to be an effective, sexual man.

A huge part of seduction is about intimacy. All of us crave it. For most people it is a peak experience. But for you it doesn?t have to be. It can be your modus operandi.

Forget about being aloof. Intimacy is women?s kryptonite. You can make them weak in the knees with a look.

I?d have to work to remember how many girls I?ve moved in on the first date. How many I connected with from the get go as if we?d been long time lovers. How easy it?s been to just connect. I?ve never tried to be aloof. I?m a passionate man. This personal style has never been a hindrance ? it has been my greatest strength.

DON?T COUNT ON INTIMACY AS A HARBINGER OF COMMITMENT, BUT RATHER AS A NORMAL MALE NEED

Xsplat?s post title ? ?intimacy without commitment? ? brings up an interesting point. For the last generation, women have counseled one another as to how to distinguish guys who want sex vs guys who want sex and other things. They?ve always broken this down on the basis of intimacy ? does he stick around after sex, eats meals, do you meet his parents, does he talk about his feelings, etc.

But lately, women have been flummoxed as these rules seem to be breaking down. ?I don?t get it, we sleep together, eat together, we hang out with his friends, but he says I?m not his girlfriend. He doesn?t talk about planning the future. But he does everything I?d expect a boyfriend to do. Is he just in it for the sex? Is this a ruse? WTF??

What?s really going on, laid bare, is that the man enjoys intimacy, and ? in what is the really distinctive characteristic of today?s sexual marketplace ? he doesn?t feel the need to put some amorphous concept of ?commitment? underneath it.

(Another factor here is that women have raised the costs and expectations of a ?relationship? to very high levels, such that men are wary of putting the ?relationship? label on things so as to avoid the subtextual obligations. Thus men may steer towards ?friends with benefits? arrangements that, far from being booty calls, are relationships in everything but name. A tertiary factor is that men have noticed women?s ability to get out of relationships with almost zero cost to themselves, and are not eager to sign up for an ontological designation that introduces such an?asymmetry.)

Underlying this confusion on the part of women is that women have been taught that men DON?T have active emotional centers and DON?T desire intimacy and possibly that emotional investment is just a con that men pull to secure sexual access. So this male behavior makes no sense, because they have a bogus model.

I see this ?indefinite term relationship? as an outcome of a few combined factors, the most prominent being Boomerism and the accelerating sequelae of the sexual revolution.

In short, first we decoupled sex from commitment, which resulted in mainstream effects like one-night stands and booty calls and excesses like ?free love? communities. Now we?re decoupling intimacy from ?commitment,? reflected in endless engagements and fully-ornamented no-term relationships. And a lot of men are finding that?s a pretty good deal.

Now to the core of the discussion.

GEN Y WAS DEPRIVED OF THE TOOLS FOR SOUND EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION

Part of the reason for this decoupling is that Millenial men were raised by Boomer parents who sought to act more as friends than as parental figures, so Millenials could never emotionally mature and become masters of a healthy emotional system, because they were carrying the emotional immaturity of their parents. Combine that with the beta-ization of Gen Y boys (partially attributable to aggressive feminism, but also to a general trend of a ?kinder and gentler? society) and you find a generation of young men who have been denied the means to meet their basic emotional and bonding needs.

This is one large reason we see so much needy behavior*.?Parents probably thought they were teaching their kids to be emotionally open, but they really just washed them in an orgasm of affect of which they couldn?t make any sense. Boys and men were isolated from the male authority ladder they require to develop from boys to teens to men, and denied the dignity of their own masculinity, inducing further shame and self-doubt.?So they seek emotional context and comfort where it appears to present itself, which to them is women, who are presented in popular culture as the font of goodness and acceptance. But they?re like a hungry man exposed to a storehouse of food, unable to eat in any fashion other than gorging.

(*By the same token, I find today?s young women unable to relate to men of normal emotional range, which they interpret as insecurity and impending neediness ? an emotional trap for their own immature affective systems that they are desperate to avoid.?This explains their preferential and often exclusive attraction to men who overtly display a lack of the emotional vocabulary that is the mark of the unforigveable beta ? in other words, the guys act like jerks, and the women take it as a signal of emotional security, while the rest of the guys are pre-emptively rejected or go completely unnoticed under the assumption they are incipient emotional vampires.?This will be discussed at length in a future post.)

IF YOU?RE SEXY YOU?RE ALLOWED TO BE EMOTIONAL

And of course, because we live in a tingle-first society, the only way for a man to get this intimacy that is his fundamental need is to be sexually attractive and to be under emotional control.?There IS no emotional intimacy available to a man today unless he is able to sexually attract a woman. He can?t hope to parlay paper-alpha status and beta traits into an audition period in which her respect and attraction can grow. He?s gotta have it up front, or he?ll get the ?well it was nice meeting you? and the posthumous ?there just wasn?t any spark? speech she gives to her friends. As Athol Kay put it:

There?s probably not a single man reading this blog who hasn?t had his heart ripped out by a woman rejecting him for his lack of Game at some point in his life. Many of the male readers of this blog are in sexless marriages too. So learning Game is pure and simple?a requirement?for the average guy dealing with women. We?re learning it to simply be able to?have?a relationship with women.

Despite women?s plaintive cries for men who will resonate emotionally with them, men have been consistently punished for seeking to meet their emotional needs as a primary mechanism of relating to women. I?m not going to get into a moral judgment, both sides are understandable. But clever men notice the negative outcomes and veer in the emotionally stunted direction intentionally, which crystallizes into a paradox where they can acquire the furiously sought emotional contact they are no longer in a condition to receive. Which loops us back to the problem that Infantry and Wudang speak of at the top of this post.

In conclusion: long-term commitment and its obligations are decoupling from sex, intimacy and the other benefits of relationships, due to a host of reasons?relating to poor emotional rearing, a broken and disrespected ?commitment? system, and a sexually atomized society. Game is a partial solution to the male problem of getting sexual attention which is a prerequisite for acquiring emotional comfort and relationship benefits, but is not a solution IF one becomes emotionally repressed and confined in the process. For some men that?s not a big deal; for most men I wager it is, because for them it?s about a lot more than rubbing until you get off ? it?s about contact and closeness, and?being desired and respected and allowed to be vulnerable.

The Baltimore Snacker: Snacking State-by-State: South Dakota II - If ...

South Dakota is one of the few states with its own official state dessert, cake. ?Or should I say?kuchen, which?is German for "cake". ?With its large German American population, South Dakota's specifically German cake should be of little surprise as an official dessert.

Official Name:?State of South Dakota
State Nickname:?The Mount Rushmore State
Admission to the US:?November 2, 1889 (#40)
Capital:?Pierre (8th largest)
Other Important Cities:?Sioux Falls (largest), Rapid City (2nd largest), Aberdeen (3rd largest)
Region:?Midwest, Great Plains; West North Central (US Census)
RAFT Nations:?Bison;?Pinyon Nut
Bordered by:?North Dakota (north), Minnesota (east), Nebraska (south), Wyoming & Montana (west)
Official State Foods and Edible Things:?fry bread (bread), honey bee (insect, for the honey), kuchen (dessert), milk (drink), ring-necked pheasant (bird), walleye (fish), Western wheat grass (grass, though I imagine few people drink the wheat grass concoctions popular with health nuts elsewhere in the country),
Some Famous and Typical Foods:?Native American foods, especially those of the Great Plains (wojapi,?fry bread, Bannock bread, and so on, as well as traditional foods such as?pemmican and?wahuwapa wasna); German and Eastern European foods, including?kuchen?& chislic?

South Dakota officially made?kuchen?the official state dessert in 2000, after a hard fought (okay, maybe not?that?hard, but quite delicious)?struggle the previous legislative session. ?In his article "Cookin' Kuchen", Trevor Guthmiller - as referenced by the North Dakota State University Library's "Germans from Russia Heritage Collection" - points out that?kuchen?was an important part of South Dakota culture long before that.
German immigrants brought kuchen to South Dakota in the 1880s. Homesteaders often brought very little with them besides their clothes, basic tools, self- sufficiency and a determination to face the challenges that a rough and unsettled South Dakota threw at them...Many came directly from Germany, others most recently from Russia. Their hard work and agricultural prowess turned McPherson County [where many settled] into one of the largest wheat- producing areas in the country...?
To understand why kuchen is such a staple in McPherson County, you must understand the heritage of the people who live there. In 1990, 2,758 residents [the single largest ethnic group in the county] listed their primary ancestry as German... Eureka holds a Schmeckfest every fall, and Leola celebrates Rhubarb Day every other July, and kuchen is prominently featured in those events. There aren?t many lutefisk feeds in this part of the state; it?s a kuchen- eatin? crowd if there ever was one. [Guthmiller 2004]
There are many different varieties of?kuchen: those based on fruits, on cottage cheese, on cream cheese, on a streussel-type filling, and so on. ?So it must have been a difficult choice to pick one to be the state's official dessert. ?The one that was put in place: the apple and cream cheese?kuchen. ?The South Dakota state government [South Dakota Secretary of State Office 2007: 14] even prints the complete "official state recipe" in a government publication. ?Good luck getting them to do that in Annapolis for Smith Island cake.

The recipe I interpret below is the official?kuchen?recipe of the state of South Dakota, on page 14 of the?2007 South Dakota Legislative Manual. ?Since this?is?a government publication,?I could copy and quote the recipe word for word, but you can look it up yourself.

The Recipe: Kuchen

For the official South Dakota?kuchen?recipe assemble the following:

For the crust, you will need:

* regular flour (have it)
* sugar (same)
* salt (yup, have that, too)
* vanilla (got it)
* butter (this I would have had, were it not for that wretched?derecho?that knocked out power in my neighborhood - and many neighborhoods throughout the Mid-Atlantic - for at least five whole days. ?Another $2 for some new butter. ?This?should?be cold but it worked fine at room temperature for me),

For the cream cheese filling that goes on top of the crust, you will need:

* more vanilla and sugar
*?cream cheese (a pound, or two blocks, each about $2 at Harris Teeter)
* an egg (at room temperature - this also had to be replaced thanks to that damn storm)

And for the apple topping, you will also need

* still?more?sugar
* cinnamon (had it)
* and, of course, apples (I got three Granny Smiths for about $2 total)

Mix together the dry ingredients for your crust. ?Use a mixer or just a spoon.
Cut in the butter and add the vanilla.
And press the dough into a lightly greased 9" x 13" pan. ?Put in a preheated 450?F oven for about 15 minutes. ?When done, take out and cool it down, also reducing your oven to 400?F.
While the crust is baking, peel, core and thinly slice your apples and set aside.
Mix together your filling ingredients, apart from the egg, again with a mixer or a spoon.
Add the egg...
...and mix thoroughly.

Pour the filling over the baked crust and spread out evenly.
Next, mix together your sugar and cinnamon.
Arrange the apple slices over the filling as tightly as possible. ?Although I cut up three apples, I could barely fit half of the slices on top.

?Cover with the cinnamon and sugar, and bake for 20 minutes.

With as many components as this recipe has, it is easier than it seems. ?It's best served cold I find, and easier to cut for that matter. ?The apples are still a little crunchy and the cream cheese is a nice, sweet complement to them. ?Now just imagine all the?other?recipes for?kuchen?I could have done!

- - - - -

Now we're done with South Dakota, and it's time to head southward to the home of of bluegrass, Memphis BBQ and the one and only Miss Dolly Parton! ?We are ringing the bell(e)s of Tennessee next week!
