Pa. Education Secretary Ron Tomalis reacts to Connecticut school ...

As more details emerge about the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and seven adults dead, state Education Secretary Ron Tomalis said the most important thing right now is to think of the victims and their families.

"Our hearts go out to the families of the children and educators who were caught up in this

tragedy," Tomalis said in an afternoon phone interview.

But he also added it serves as an ongoing reminder to school officials in Pennsylvania.

"We must be ever vigilant in how we protect our children," Tomalis said. "We must make sure we have every safety measure in place, to make sure when children go into schools that they are well protected."

Often times when a horrific tragedy like this occurs, copy-cat events follow. Tomalis said that is a concern.

"That's why we call on all our educators across the commonwealth to have an extra level of vigilance above and beyond what they do every day," he said. "Almost all of our children will come home to their moms and dads after school. That's the way it should be in our society and will be in our society, but that doesn't mean we let our guard down particularly in a heightened environment like this."
