What consumers can expect in 2013

I don?t have a crystal ball, but I am in contact with a lot of experts in consumer protection, marketing and fraud prevention. Based on information provided by these trusted sources, here are some predictions about what you can expect in 2013.

Anticipated price hikes
The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts grocery bills will rise 3 to 4 percent in 2013. Higher feed costs will continue to push up prices for animal-based products, especially dairy. In its Food Price Outlook Report, USDA noted that inflation should be ?above the historical average? for cereals and bakery products.

Banks will keep looking for ways to raise revenue without inciting customer backlash. This could mean higher overdraft fees and charges for using an out-of-network ATM. It could also mean higher minimum balances to avoid a monthly service charge.

??We?ll continue to see banks emphasize customer relationships, rewarding those customers that have more accounts, bigger balances, or other products and services by waiving checking account fees,? said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

Good news for home buyers and home builders: Bankrate expects mortgage rates to remain low.

?The Fed is aggressively buying bonds with the goal of keeping mortgage rates low,? McBride explained. ?Because of this, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate should stay below 4 percent for much of the year ? even if the economy continues to improve.?

The editors at dealnews.com predict a number of things will be more expensive in 2013. These include: smartphones and some other electronics, cars and many luxury goods.

Dealnews also expects higher shipping costs. It predicts a jump of 4.5 to 4.9 percent from both UPS and FedEx. This could seriously hurt small businesses and people who sell things on the Internet. It might also affect which orders qualify for ?free shipping? at some online stores.

And here?s a surprising one: Dealnews says copper prices could rise. That would have a ripple effect, because copper is used in all sorts of consumer products: wire, pots and residential water pipes. It?s also needed for industrial equipment that brews beer, distills liquor and makes candy.

On the bright side: Gasoline prices should continue their slow decline, barring unforeseen circumstances. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects retail prices for regular-grade gasoline to average $3.43 a gallon in 2013. That would be down from this year?s average of $3.63.

More consumer-friendly regulations
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) went after unfair practices in the financial marketplace with gusto in 2012. That is sure to continue in the New Year.

My best guess is that we?ll see new regulations proposed for payday loans, prepaid cards and credit reporting agencies. The CFPB is already investigating complaints about errors in credit reports and the difficulty or sometimes inability to have them corrected.

As of Jan. 2, the agency will regulate the country?s large debt collectors, an industry that has been widely criticized for harassment, deception and other illegal tactics to get people to pay ? whether they owe the debt or not, in some cases.

?Millions of consumers are affected by debt collection, and we want to make sure they are treated fairly,? CFPB director Richard Cordray said in a statement.

I wouldn?t be surprised to see some civil penalties levied and new rules proposed to prevent abusive collection tactics.

New and changing digital threats
Cybercriminals are sure to step-up their game again in 2013. In a new report, Sophos (the giant digital security company), predicts businesses will be hit with more malware attacks that give the intruders ?long-term, high impact access? to those companies.

Digital extortion should increase with more ransomware malware attacks. ?(See ConsumerMan: Latest ?ransomware? attacks are scarily sophisticated.) This new generation of malicious software can encrypt the data on your hard drive and hold it for ransom. It?s often exceptionally hard or impossible to reverse the damage. This makes it critical to back-up your data on a daily basis.

Mobile devices, with GPS location, social media apps and new technology (such as near field communication) will give cybercriminals new opportunities to compromise your security and privacy.

?This trend is identifiable not just for mobile devices, but computing in general,? the Sophos report warns. ?In the coming year, watch for new examples of attacks built on these technologies.?

Men, millennials in the grocery store
Men have become more comfortable in the kitchen and more active in planning meals and food shopping. A survey by Cone Communications found that more dads than moms (52 percent compared to 46 percent) plan meals for the week ahead.

Industry analyst Phil Lempert, who runs the website SupermarketGuru, predicts grocery stores will focus more on the male shopper this year and in the future.

?Some supermarkets are experimenting with ?man aisles? ? locations in the store that feature male-oriented foods and other products to make shopping and impulse buying more targeted,? he said.

Lempert also expects supermarkets and food companies to go after the millennial shoppers (those born between 1982 and 2001) who want flavorful and ethnically diverse food that is also affordable. By 2020, millennials will represent about 20 percent of the population and compared to the general population, they?re expected to have twice the buying power for food they eat at home.

?Millennials are deal seekers,? Lempert pointed out. ?They are much more focused on finding the lowest price over brand loyalty.?

USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Sources say receiver Robert Woods ready to announce jump to pros

EL PASO, Texas - USC wide receiver Robert Woods is expected to announce immediately after the Sun Bowl on Monday that he will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft, according to sources.

Woods said earlier this week he made his decision but would not announce it until after USC plays Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl. USC did not allow him to speak to the media Saturday.

Woods is USC's all-time leading receiver with 249 receptions in three seasons and considered a first- or second-round draft pick.

Cornerback Nickell Robey said he remains undecided about his future.

"I really don't know yet," Robey said.

Lee hurt

Wide receiver Marqise Lee injured his knee while making a quick cut during practice and did not return. He was examined by trainers and USC coach Lane Kiffin said he was "hopeful" Lee would play.

"We'll have to keep checking him out," Kiffin said.

Lee walked to the team bus without looking like he was in pain and told an onlooker he was "good."

If Lee can't start, he would be replaced by freshman Nelson Agholor.

Play calling still an issue

With Kiffin criticized for trying to call plays and be the head coach during games, reporters continued to ask if he will relinquish some duties to offensive coordinator Kennedy Polamalu.

"A lot of coaches that call plays that I've been around, it's very difficult to give up," Polamalu said. "We have not discussed play calling. We've just discussed how

to use the strength of the staff."

"As the head coach, he is the pulse of the team. So we're going to do what he wants."

Kiffin remained vague Saturday even though he has spent more time in bowl practices watching the defense and special teams.

"We'll look at all that stuff after (the season)," he said.

Fond farewell?

Kiffin said he did not really think about having only a couple of more days coaching with his father, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who will try to get an NFL job next season.

"It's not like we've been together for 15 years," Lane Kiffin said. "I haven't thought about it."

Monte Kiffin said Saturday he had "fun" coaching at USC.

"Hopefully I get back to the NFL," he said.

The Kiffins disagreed with each other about whether Georgia Tech is similar in offensive scheme to Oregon.

"It's like playing Oregon," Lane Kiffin said.

When Monte Kiffin was asked if Georgia Tech was similar to Oregon, he said "not really."

Injury report

Tailback Curtis McNeal did not practice for the second straight day with an undisclosed injury.

"We won't put his health at risk if there's an issue," Polamalu said.

Wide receiver George Farmer returned after missing two days. There were fears Farmer suffered a possible concussion Wednesday.

No dinner conflict

Both teams ate at a steakhouse Saturday night but the Sun Bowl staggered the meals so USC would eat 30 minutes later than Georgia Tech. That eliminated any issue of whether the teams were expected to eat together, like the first night when Georgia Tech left a dinner before USC arrived.

Bitch Flicks: Gender and Food Week: 'Bridesmaids': Brunch ...

?

The rituals of contemporary female friendship are punctuated with food and drink as signifiers in the 2011 comedy hit Bridesmaids, directed by Paul Feig. Many of the key emotional moments of the film involve food and drink. Intimate aspects of female friendship are revealed while eating; a female collective bonds over feasting (and its repercussions); and a developing romance is linked to carrots and cake.?

In the opening scene of Bridesmaids, set in Milwaukee, and written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, Annie Walker (Kristen Wiig) is sexually involved with Ted (Jon Hamm). Their encounters are casual, or so they say to each other. When Ted asks her to leave his home in the morning, the disappointment shows on Annie?s face. But later, over brunch with her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph), we learn how detrimental ?the Ted thing? is for Annie. Annie tries to frame the torrid night with Ted as an ?adult sleepover? but Lillian tells her she can do better: ?You hate yourself after you see him.? The female friendship ritual of a weekend brunch with a girlfriend is highlighted here. Lillian?s loyalty to Annie is established through her candor, her desire to protect Annie, and her inspiring admonition to Annie to find a better partner. The scene ends with the goofy pair playing with their food, placing it in their teeth -- a reflection of the playful nature of their bond and its longevity: they?ve been friends since childhood. They are comfortable and authentic with each other.?

In the next scene, as they walk away from the restaurant, Annie?s deeper tie with food is revealed. Lillian and Annie stroll past a deserted bakery named ?Cake Baby,? a business Annie opened during the recession. Annie registers sadness as she sees the empty building again. To comfort her friend Lillian comments: ?They were good cakes, Annie.??

Annie is no longer a baker. She currently works in a jewelry store as a sales clerk, where she tells frequently customers that love doesn?t last -- a philosophy that goes against the ?eternal bliss? code needed to sell wedding rings to couples. And her home life is equally unsettled because her male roommate?s sister has moved in to the small apartment; the roommate?s sister is featured in a food-related scene when she pours an open package of green peas on her back in order to calm a new tattoo.?

Annie?s one bright spot in life is getting together with Lillian. She brings a bottle of wine over to Lillian?s apartment for an evening in with drinks and magazines. There?s a wire basket filled with apples on the coffee table, and Lillian, holding out her hand in a formal way, says: ?I want to eat an apple.? It is then that Annie notices Lillian?s glittering ring. Lillian is newly engaged to Doug. Apples, as symbols, are present in many ancient stories, such as ?The Golden Apples? from the Garden of Hesperides or the tale of Adam and Eve. Apples classically represent knowledge; according to legend, this comes from the five-point star present in the apple?s core (Chevalier and Gheerbrant 36). By becoming engaged, Lillian indicates she is ready to move on to another phase, to gain more knowledge, to individuate. This is underscored by the visual and textual reference to apples in this scene. Lillian asks Annie to be her Maid of Honor at the impending nuptials.?

When Annie goes to pick up her mom (Jill Clayburgh) to attend Lillian and Doug?s engagement party, her mother gently states that Annie is in a downward spiral: ?Hitting bottom is a good thing?because there?s nowhere to go but up.? In Maureen Murdock?s book The Heroine?s Journey, Murdock differentiates the steps of a female hero?s journey from those of a male hero. One of Murdock?s vital points involves a ?Descent to the Goddess? to heal aspects of a mother-daughter split. According to Murdock, a woman begins an initiation process on the descent arc of a heroine?s journey: ?It may involve a seemingly endless period of wandering, grief, rage, dethroning kings, of looking for the lost pieces of herself, and meeting the dark feminine. It may take weeks, months or years? (8). These steps may be seen in Annie?s journey in ?Bridesmaids.? Her fruitless dalliance with Ted, her aimless job and transient home life, her connection to a lost childhood through Lillian (and the mourning of childhood?s end) are all present in the early part of the film. Annie?s meeting of the ?dark feminine? in Bridesmaids is yet to come.?

At the subsequent fancy engagement party, another ritual of female friendship is revealed. In a sequence with Annie and the beautiful Helen (Rose Byrne), Lillian?s newer ?best friend,? Annie and Helen compete with each other to deliver the best bridal toast, with alternate, escalating praise of Lillian in front of the gathered crowd. There, Annie drinks champagne, and reveals that Annie and Lillian have a ritual of ?drunken Saturday nights at Rockin? Sushi.? Saturday nights are times of revelry and letting loose; Annie and Lillian have a standing BFF hangout restaurant ritual on that night. We later learn that Helen longs for this: an ongoing invitation to female revelry and even the spontaneity involved in such female revelry. It?s something the seemingly perfect Helen doesn?t have.?

At the engagement party, the rest of the female collective in the film is 3 introduced: the ?Bridesmaids.? Newlywed innocent Becca (Ellie Kemper), jaded mother-of-three Rita (Wendi McClendon-Covey), and the intrepid Megan, sister to the groom (Melissa McCarthy) are there. They, along with Helen and Annie, complete Lillian?s assembled group of female wedding supporters. It is through the activities of this group that the ?dark feminine? is explored more fully in the film.?

In the hierarchy of a wedding, a bride and groom are the most important roles. Bridesmaids, taken as an archetypal female construction, may be seen to represent ?sisterhood,? a unified group of female attendants to the bride. If so, the dysfunction of this specific collective, as revealed in Act Two, serves as wry, hilarious commentary on aspects of the dark feminine and our wedding rituals from the female gaze.?

Near the end of Act One, Annie is pulled over at night for a violation by a state policeman named Nathan Rhodes, his last name perhaps a commentary of Annie?s own life at a crossroads. Annie?s tail lights need to be repaired, a recurring metaphor reflecting Annie?s inner life. Rhodes (Chris O?Dowd) recognizes Annie from her bakery days. He tells her how much he admired her delicious pastries, especially her cream puffs. In this scene we learn that the bakery is connected to emotional pain for Annie -- and not just for the financial devastation she suffered when it failed. Her boyfriend, who worked there, left her when it closed. Rhodes reminds her: ?I appreciated your cakes.??

After this encounter, a brief baking sequence follows for Annie. In the kitchen alone, she bakes a beautiful cupcake for herself, decorated with a gorgeous flower on top. Annie?s baking skills and her artistry are displayed. Pensively, she eats the single perfect cupcake, alone.?

A baker is someone who could be seen to work ?alchemically?; the transformation of raw materials into something edible and wonderful involves the use of an oven, which, as an image, could resonate as ?womb.? Annie begins, in the scene above, to try to reconnect with her baking skills, and the warmth of the womb.?

In Act Two, Annie meets the dark feminine as reflected by the bridesmaids -- and her own psyche. It is in perhaps the most famous sequence in the film, involving feasting at an authentic Brazilian restaurant and subsequent scenes at an exclusive couture bridal shop named ?Belle en Blanc,? that the dark feminine is revealed in a graphic, scatological way.

The competition between Annie and Helen is highlighted throughout this sequence. Whether it?s over the theme of the bridal shower, or where the bachelorette party should be held, Annie and Helen are at odds. Annie?s taste is seen as d?class? compared to Helen?s standards. After the meal at the Brazilian restaurant, presented as a communal feasting experience, Helen and Annie spar over the selection of the bridesmaids? dresses. It is then that the group becomes sick with food poisoning, leading to the massive need for a bathroom, including a toilet, a sink, and in Lillian?s case, the city street. When Annie tries to pretend she does not feel sick, Helen tests her resolve by handing her a Jordan Almond to eat.?

The juxtaposition of the name of the shop, ?Belle en Blanc,? compared to what happens to the collective, suggests an ironic commentary on aspects of the dark feminine. And it is related to food. The food poisoning underscores the feminine spiritual poisoning felt between Annie and Helen, and even Lillian, as revealed by competition and wedding stress. At one point, a character says that one of the dresses at ?Belle en Blanc? is so pretty that it makes her stomach hurt.?

On Annie?s way home from another Ted encounter, she stops at a small liquor market, and reaches to buy a drink called ?Calm.? There, she sees Rhodes again, and he offers her carrots. She ends up eating carrots with him, sitting on a car hood outside. He tells her she should be setting up a new bakery. Annie replies that she doesn?t bake anymore. A carrot is dropped on the ground, and Rhodes says that there is always one lucky, ugly carrot in the bag. He offers it to her. She won?t take it. But their fun continues into the dawn, as he shows her how to use his official radar gun to catch speeders.?

When the Bridesmaids return home prematurely -- after a disastrous attempt to fly to Vegas for a bachelorette party -- Annie encounters Rhodes. They go to a bar. Upon hearing her tale of woe, Rhodes dubs her the ?Maid of Dishonor? and urges Annie to start baking again. Annie says it doesn?t make her happy anymore. She spends the night with Rhodes, and they become sexually involved. In the morning, he surprises her by assembling baking supplies to encourage her to bake again: ?Your workshop awaits.? Angered, Annie refuses: ?I don?t need you to fix me.? She leaves, declaring their encounter a mistake.?

After losing her job and apartment, Annie moves back in with her mother. She refuses Rhodes? calls. Annie tells her mom that she hadn?t hit bottom before. Now, perhaps she finally has. This realization is underscored when she drives by her old bakery and sees the business name ?Cake Baby? newly defaced with a sexual slur.?

At the elaborate French-toned bridal shower, arranged perfectly by Helen but stolen from Annie?s idea, is a chocolate fountain and a giant heart-shaped cookie. As a shower gift to Lillian, Annie assembled an amazing box of childhood memories. Helen tops Annie by giving Lillian a trip to Paris to meet with the couture wedding dress designer. At the party, Annie breaks down, and in a culminating Act Two event, attacks the giant heart cookie and the chocolate fountain. In a rant, Annie calls out Lillian for participating in such a pretentious social gathering. Lillian responds: she disinvites Annie from the wedding. By attacking the giant cookie heart, Annie embodies her own need to address matters of the heart, and even her ?baking.? The dark chocolate fountain is perhaps an ironic visual callback to the dark feminine as seen earlier in the ?Belle en Blanc? sequence. Annie?s rage could also be seen as a part of dark feminine power -- her own.?

After Annie?s car is damaged in a hit and run, she?s depressed. With nowhere to go, she stays inside her mother?s home all the time -- the ultimate ?Return to the Womb.? Megan comes to visit, with the nine pups she stole from the bridal shower. Trying to encourage her, Megan tells Annie: ?You?re your problem and you?re also your solution.??

Annie starts baking. She cracks eggs, whisks, blends sugars. Her car is finally repaired, and it?s all gratis, thanks to a deal Rhodes made with the mechanic who owed him a favor. To show her appreciation, Annie leaves a beautiful cake with a carrot on top at Rhodes? doorstep, a reference to the lucky carrot he told her about. This is a signifier that Annie is ascending, healing, back on her path. Her descent spiral is over. She can ?bake? again. A carrot, in folklore, is related to fertility and seeding; it also is reputed to have medicinal qualities connected to ?sight.? The carrot on the cake represents the renewal of Annie?s vision, her ?warming,? and her outreach to Rhodes. But Rhodes leaves the box outside on his front step. Annie sees raccoons eating from the box, at one point.?

Further Act Three action involves trying to track down the missing Lillian, who has disappeared. Helen locates Annie at her mom?s house, and the two frenemies try to find Lillian. It is in through this activity we learn of Helen?s longing for true female friendship -- that she?s never had a long term female friendship like Lillian?s and Annie?s relationship.?

Eventually, Lillian is found at her apartment. She walked out on her own rehearsal dinner. She tells Annie: ?I outcrazied you.? On the brink of her own life -- changing step, Lillian worries about what will happen to Annie in the future.?

Annie reassures Lillian: ?I?m gonna be fine, I am fine? -- an indication that Annie knows she?s better. Then she helps Lillian get ready for the ceremony. The wedding is back on track.?

Act Three culminates in entire wedding rocking out to Wilson Phillips? performance of ?Hold On,? an extravagance arranged by Helen. But after it all, Annie invites Helen to a Saturday evening out sometime at Rockin? Sushi with Lillian and Annie -- the ultimate girlfriend ritual. This makes Helen happy, and signals also that Annie has ?warmed up? to Helen. Annie wants to include Helen in the drunken Rockin? Sushi ritual of female friendship, including revelry and spontaneity.?

After Rhodes and Annie get together at the movie?s end -- when he picks her up after the wedding and reveals ?I ate your cake?-- a final coda to the film involves Megan and Air Marshall Jon who use food, ?a bear sandwich,? in bawdy foreplay. The rituals of contemporary female friendships are underscored by the use and presence of food and drink as signifiers at important emotional moments throughout Bridesmaids. Annie Walker?s journey in the movie, in a downward spiral or ?descent motif? is healed through her encounters with aspects of the dark feminine as revealed in the shadow side of ?sisterhood? and in her own psyche. Annie?s healing process, after failing at business and at love, is also reflected in her great talent to bake again in Act Three. But this time, she?s not baking for business or commerce -- she?s baking to express herself, to be warm, to acknowledge finding the Lucky Carrot.?

Scranton teachers union finds fault in PSSA investigation

A trained investigator, and not the superintendent of the Scranton School District, should have led the probe in determining whether cheating occurred on standardized tests, according to the teachers union.

The Scranton Federation of Teachers has filed grievances over the suspension of one teacher without pay and letters of reprimand given to four others. One other teacher may also be receiving a letter, and neither the union nor school district will identify the teachers.

Superintendent William King was directed by the state earlier this year to conduct an investigation into whether cheating occurred on Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests taken between 2009 and 2011. Scranton was one of six districts identified by the state in September for possible manipulation of answer sheets by adults. A forensic analysis by the state looked at PSSA scores and examined the rate in which answers were changed.

Union President Rosemary Boland claims the way Mr. King conducted the investigation was flawed, and she is discrediting his findings.

"If this was going to be done and done correctly, it should have been done by a private entity," she said. "Because he did the investigation himself, he set the parameters, the course and he conducted it."

Interviews with students were done by himself and parents did not know their children were interviewed, Ms. Boland said. Mr. King came up with questions on his own and used the data to draw his own conclusions, she said,

"He is a superintendent of schools. He's not a trained investigator. He has no skills like that. No superintendent does," Ms. Boland said.

The union has received no details on what was found in the investigation, only the names of the teachers who are being disciplined, she said. Ms. Boland has asked for all notes, data and other information used in the investigation.

Grievances by the teachers who have received letters of reprimand have already been heard by the school board. Prior to the hearings this month, district solicitor John Minora proposed a deal to the teachers: the letters would be removed from their permanent files in June if the teachers "behaved themselves and did nothing wrong" for the rest of the school year, Ms. Boland said.

Those teachers said they had not done anything wrong, and refused to take the deal, she said.

Mr. King said he stands by his investigation. In a November letter, the Department of Education accepted Mr. King's report.

"I conducted the investigation to the best of my ability," he said. "I provided my findings, and they accepted my findings and commended me for the thorough job I did."

Mr. King said he does not plan to publicly release any details about the findings of his investigation.

This fall, state Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis blamed a decline in test scores statewide on the cheating investigation and the additional security measures taken for the 2012 test. With extra security, a truer measure of student achievement was found, instead of scores being artificially inflated by the cheating of teachers or administrators, Mr. Tomalis said at the time.

Ms. Boland said the state should not have let Mr. King conduct the investigation on his own and has problems with the state's probe as well.

"This was an attempt to discredit public education in the state," she said.

In a statement, state Department of Education press secretary Tim Eller said the investigation was initiated to ensure the integrity of the exams and that the results reflect actual student performance.

"Those who interfere with this process do a disservice to students, parents and taxpayers," he said.

Stocks open mixed as budget deadline nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are little changed in early trading on Wall Street as a budget deadline approaches with no deal in sight.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down six points at 12,931 shortly after the opening bell Monday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up two points at 1,405 and the Nasdaq composite edged up 10 points to 2,970.

There are just hours to go before a midnight deadline, when sweeping tax increases and government spending cuts will go into effect unless lawmakers agree on a plan to cut the nation's budget deficit.

More than $500 billion in 2013 tax increases would take effect and $109 billion would be slashed from defense and domestic programs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says negotiations are ongoing.

Church Heavily Damaged in Tornado Holds Service Elsewhere

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A church heavily damaged in the Christmas day storm was forced to hold Sunday service at a different location Sunday morning.

Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Church had part of its roof torn off and damage to the inside. Local 15 News talked with the pastor, who said he would have to find somewhere else to hold Sunday service.

The congregation gathered at Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church in Toulminville. Members were not letting the disaster ruin their worship.

"It's sad and I miss our service at the old church, but I know God has better things ahead for us. And I thank God for the pastor carrying over as much as he can," said church member Carolyn Gardner.

No word on when the church will be repaired.

?Beyond Planting Trees? ? Interview with Documentary Filmmaker ...

I am always astounded by the selflessness that is displayed by some documentary filmmakers. Their resilience to tell a story not for the entertainment or occupation of our free time, but to question our human condition, and challenge us as an individual. Danielle Berg is a creative writing and literature major at Stony Brook University, she also possesses an acute admiration for cinema. Recently she dug deep into her past and spirit to conceive an ambitious project to help raise awareness for the Choco Rainforest in Ecuador. The place in question is the Itaopa?Reserve. Currently Danielle is raising money ($5000) on Indiegogo, to purchase a; camera, a laptop, and editing software, to direct, shoot, and edit a film about the reserve. After which she will donate all the equipment to the head of the reservation Raul, so that he may continue to archive video to raise awareness.

I could speak about Ms. Berg and her project for hours but as a writer herself, she deserves as much room on this page as I do. The following is an interview I conducted with her about both her latest cinematic endeavour, and her itch for film.

The Artifice: You?ll have to bear with me, this is my first interview [for The Artifice].

Danielle Berg: I am so delighted to be your first. [laughs] I will bear with you.

A:?Groovy. Do you remember the moment that you decided to make this film?

DB:?It was this summer, when I was making my third short film. I like film, it?s a lot of work, lots of hours in the editing room. At the end I had a film that I liked, but in my writing I prefer non-fiction, so I started thinking about some documentary ideas. I volunteered at the Itaopa Reservation 3 years ago and it always kind of stuck with me. And I thought, you know what, I have the skills to do something for them that stood beyond just planting trees, and the things that most of the volunteers do. So I think it was in the editing room when I was really really frustrated, and I thought I could put this frustration toward something that was activism, and not just a video for my own self.

A:?I think that?s great! I know a lot of people including myself,?whom make films? but it doesn?t really challenge anything, like your film can and probably will do. Could you talk a little bit about your past experience with film?

DB:?My film experience is pretty limited, I lucked into it. The (Stony Brook University) Southampton Campus was going to expand to include film and theatre, they got the faculty but they didn?t have the students yet. So they started offering classes to the writing students, and I said ?that sounds awesome!?. So a lot of my friends took the class and it was a lot of fun. It?s something I never thought I?d be able to do, I?ve always had an interest in film editing but I just didn?t have to skill for it. I did it on a whim.

The first film I made was? almost? unusable. I didn?t understand the idea of continuity at all and I had a little kid playing chess with an old lady and every take the cards would be different. It was horrible (laughs). Now I wanna go back, and I can probably make something with it. It?s so sweet but it?s nothing.

The second one I did may have been lost forever, because they cleared the hard drives at school without having a chance to back it up. So I don?t know if it exists. I act in it and my friends brother who is an actor, is in it as well, and this one is very close to me because? I was in it, and I wrote something more personal to me. We did a whole day of shooting, which was a crash course in how to not do things (laughs). I was so tired because I was in it and I was in theory, directing and I had my friends doing the camera work. But toward the end of the day at midnight I was like ?I don?t even care, let?s just make this happen!? and then we had to do a reshoot a couple of weeks later because we needed some stuff that I hadn?t gotten. I learned a lot on that one.

Those two films were made in the class I took over the semester. Then Madaline who is in the film department, offered me and a couple of friends an opportunity to work the class over the summer so we didn?t have to pay for it. I got to take this class with Mitchel Kriegman (Rugrats, Rocko?s Modern Life), who wrote all the?Nickelodeon shows I grew up with, which was very cool, and I made my third short film. And that one is alive and well on YouTube. And that one was also one we did in a week. I was happy with the results! Like I said though, fiction films right now, don?t do it for me as much as the non-fiction stuff.

A:?When did Indiegogo come into the picture?

DB:?So I wanted originally to just fund the project myself because I really don?t like asking for help, it makes me uncomfortable and I?m shy (laughs), so I really didn?t want to do that. I have a few friends who have used Kickstarter and Indiegogo and it?s been really successful, but I kinda wanted to just make it happen and not get hung up on the fundraising cause it?s a lot of work. I?m still working on my thesis, I didn?t want to spend too much time fundraising. A friend asked me if that was the route I was gonna go, and I said ?I don?t know?. My friend Will who is a very ?think big? kind of person said, ?you know it doesn?t have to be your own money, people do things like this all the time and they ask for money?, and I was like ?yea I know, you?re probably right?. So I checked them out, so Kickstarter doesn?t do causes or non-profits, it?s only for art and personal projects. Then I looked at gofundme, it?s smaller, a lot of people use it for stuff like ?my car broke, and I?m poor, so help me fix it!? (laughs). Indiegogo has a sweet spot for it. Actually environmental campaigns don?t usually do well on Indiegogo. I don?t have a statistic for you, but if you look at how often they?re fully funded environmental causes are really on the low end of the list so I was reluctant. I figured since I had people whom were willing to help out it was just a link I could send them to show them it was valid and where it was going. My goal is $5000, I?ve raised $2000 so far but I?m gonna make it work with that. I?ll just get a less expensive camera and work around it.

A:?Why do you think these environmental causes don?t get the attention that others do?

DB:?There have been a few people I?ve talked to, (actor) Steve Hamilton is one of them. He has some experience fundraising and said that, ?people don?t donate to a cause, they donate to a person?. So when you?re fundraising, it?s more about the fundraiser or person you?re fundraising for. I think it may be too abstract but people don?t click with an environmental cause like they do with someone?s animal being sick. I don?t really know, I guess we care a little bit more about people, then animals, then somehow the environment is taken very much for granted and it doesn?t have a face. Also there are just a million causes in the world, a million forests, a million oceans, and there?s just so many things to care about that I think it?s just so hard to grab someones attention with a rain forest that?s a third of the way across the world.

choco-rainforest-photo

A:?Would you say your person of interest in raising money was Raul?

DB:?Yea, Raul is my link to the Choco Rain Forest in the first place. He?s given up everything to protect this rain forest and I?ve seen-I?ve meet other people who do the same thing because it?s their land and they care about it. It?s just kind of amazing because you don?t see that much in the U.S. I think that may be because our Government does a better job of protecting the land. Down there, the protection at the Choco is almost nothing. The Amazon is a much more publicized, and the?rainforest you think of when you think of South America. Because they drill for oil there, a lot of celebrities have gotten behind some fundraisers, helped raise money, and saved giant tracks of land in the Amazon. The Choco is there too, it?s just not as well publicized. So there are people there like Raul who are working really hard and they?re not getting the same sort of publicity.

A:?I?d say your ambitions are matched, him just being there and you spreading the word with this film. You?re a creative writing major, and film isn?t your first round pick so to speak. When you were conceptualizing the project and trying to get fundraising, what advantages did you find with your experience in writing and disadvantages with not being fluent in film?

DB:?It?d be easier for a non-writer to write something for an Indiegogo page. If you write, you?re used to doing several drafts and second guessing everything. So for me, even writing the Indiegogo page was challenging because I?m very hard on myself when it comes to writing and? that?s writing. I think in the end since I?ve been writing for a while, I can write a pitch and I?ve done some press release work before. It?s funny because if you?re doing press for someone else and writing about someone else or someone else?s project it?s really easy to do. But when you?re doing it for your own thing you suddenly become really self conscious, and you feel like you?re self promoting which feels really weird. The writing was helpful but I almost wish I was writing this for someone else, it would have been much easier, or I should have gotten one of my writing friends to do this for me (laughs). But I didn?t do that.

When it comes to film, I?ve only been doing it for about a year. So I?m not an expert camera man, or editor, but? I am a story teller, and that sounds really cheesy (laughs). If the last few years have afforded me anything, it?s how to tell an interesting story. So I trust that I?ll be able to craft a film out of all the things I?ll be encountering down there. The rest of the stuff for me just takes a lot of work. I?m probably going to be the one doing the shooting and editing, unless I somehow raise a crap ton of money to pay an editor (laughs). But I don?t think that?s how it?s gonna be. The making of the movie itself, the crafting together of the story, and the interviews, and leading it into a film, that the writing has helped me with. I think that two or three years ago I would not have undertaken this and thought, ?I can?t do this!?. But I?ve seen myself do other things I thought I couldn?t do. It gives you more confidence, although I think writers in general aren?t all that confident (laughs). Some of the best writers are not.

A:?Give me the 411 on the Choco Rainforest and the Itapoa Reserve.

DB: Back in the 60?s the government gave regular people the land, and in order to prove that they were using it so they could keep it, they had to deforest half of it. So 50 years ago, half of Ecuador?s forests were gone because of that. African Palm Companies harvest palm oil for bio-deisel fuel, which sounds great because it sounds better than oil. But everything has a consequence, even if you eat Tofu they?re cutting down some trees somewhere to plant soy, that?s just a fact. Only .3% of the land is protected from deforestation, that leaves the rest of it open for logging. They burn down the land and build these plantations, and these plantations have this effect of spoiling the water for the residence. A lot of them get pushed out of their lands? it?s like really messed up. Over here we don?t really know what?s involved with the palm oils that?s in cookies and other products we eat, but the politics behind it are really just appalling. Even if the land is protected and there?s an indigenous group living in the rain forest, they don?t know how to read. So these companies come to them with these contracts and say were gonna pay you a few hundred dollars for hundreds of acres of land. These companies promise roads, educations and all this great stuff but it turns out that non of the plantations need many employees either and they make less than when they previously were farming their own land. So they leave to find and make work in other parts of the jungle, deforesting other parts of the jungle. The others who stay behind have a higher rate of skin and liver disease from the pesticides. That?s just the people. There?s something like 3000 endemic species that don?t exist anywhere else in the world, only in the Choco rainforest, and a lot of them are highly endangered. The rate of deforestation isn?t slowing down because there isn?t any awareness about it. Jordan Karubian is a scientist who stated the Bilsa reserve, and the only video you can find on the internet about the Choco is by this guy. So there are people and organizations that are working really hard, but it?s only amounted to .3% protection.

A:?I hear they have some pretty kick ass chocolate.

DB:?(laughs) A lot of our chocolate, and coffee comes from Ecuador. Raul has a chocolate save the rainforest program where he?ll buy chocolate from the locals for 20% above the trade cost in exchange that they promise to reforest some of the land. He doesn?t do much of that anymore, he has one community that he works with and sells the chocolate out of a hostel. It?s very small, he was having trouble exporting or finding someone to export it. With Raul, he wants to free himself up so that he can be doing research in the jungle or guiding volunteers. But that (chocolate) is what I?m giving as a prize for donating, and it is great. I still have chocolate from 3 years ago that I made with my own hands. It?s totally stale, white, and crusty, but I just grind it into my smoothies and no one notices. But the chocolate I?m giving out is fresh.

me boom

A:?Either way the chocolate is good for your soul. What?s it like to work with Raul?

DB:?When you first meet Raul he?s like a lot of impassioned people, where he gets really excited about what he?s talking about and stutters. It?s so obvious when you first meet him. It is all rainforest, all the time. I learned a ton. He has these programs where people can come out for a weekend or 5 days and do a jungle trek, and I was just volunteering at his reserve, which is also an option, but there was someone coming in from Brooklyn just to do the trip and he (Raul) said ?Well, I guess you better come.?. So I got a sort of crash course in the jungle that I may not have gotten from volunteering. Volunteering for him is like; planting trees, making chocolate, or helping with the garden. He doesn?t have time to decorate his house or anything, it?s so bare bones, and he?s a man living there? and it?s obvious (laughs). It?s just enough for him to go to sleep at night so he can go out the next day. I was very tempted to paint it but he was like, ?No, we don?t need that, we need to go plant trees.?. He?s super smart, and we became really good friends. He?s a really freakin? great person, he kind of does anything for anyone. He?s inspired me a ton, because when you see someone giving up everything in their life for a cause you think, ?Well, what am I doing in my little life??. Every once in a while he gets invited to do lectures in Germany or in the U.S. I think he did one in Spain a few years ago and these people who are not biologist heard his lecture and they came to volunteer and are actually coming back to volunteer the same time I am so hopefully they?ll be a few spanish volunteers there. He (Raul) often moves people to go stay at his reserve and donate their time. I haven?t seen his lecture, but part of my hope, is that we can turn that lecture into a video and make his ?effect? exponentially larger.

A:?Sounds like you have a lot planned for the future past just making this film.

DB:?Oh yeah! One film is great, but twelve is better, so let?s do that. I could have borrowed equipment from friends, but I wanted to raise money so I can leave the equipment behind. I want to start a YouTube account for the Choco because there is only one video out there and I think that so cummy (laughs), if you google the Amazon you get a ton. They can document endangered species, have volunteer journals, anything that could encourage someone who was maybe considering donating their time to the reserve to go ahead and do it. Not to say that they shouldn?t be devoting their time to other things, of course they should, but a lot of people know about the Amazon and not a lot know about the Choco. So I?m trying to publicize it as much as I can. There is a scientist and his team researching the Brown Headed Spider Monkey which is endemic to the Choco, and it?s the most endangered Monkey in Ecuador. They found out about my project from Facebook, and got in contact with me saying they were so excited and were wondering if we could help each other out, like she could be part of the documentary, and in exchange I could help publicize their cause and I could get footage of these primates, and I?m doing this for selfless reasons? but how cool is it that! I can go one this trek with these biologist and track down one of the most endangered primates in Ecuador, like wow! I help them and they help me, and that?s what leaving electronics behind will help do. Electronics in Ecuador are way more expensive and the people there make a fraction of what we make, so me bringing a camera to them from here isn?t the same as them buying a camera down there. I have a couple of old computers that I plan on donating to them but I want to raise enough to buy a new one so it?ll last more than a year after I leave.?

A:?Well if monkeys are going extinct than us humans must not be too far behind, so I like the idea of saving them. 12 films sounds like quite an ambition, 12 is actually my lucky number.

DB:?It might not be 12 legit films but it?s gonna be videos so you can see so much about it.

A:?For those short on change or us poor college students that can?t donate on the heavier side, what can they do to help out? Besides making their own film of course, competition is stiff enough.

DB:?There?s a million causes in the world, and it?s the holiday season, and we?re all poor, and unemployment is high, so it?s really hard to ask people to support a project. And just because I care about something doesn?t mean that other people have the time, or the energy to care about the same thing. With that said, I?ve still sent out messages to my classmates and said ?hey look, there?s 40 of you, if you all just save your change and put in $10 that?s $400 toward my goal. People tend to think that their $2 doesn?t help but it does. People that can?t donate, just liking the Facebook page and spreading the word helps. The people who know about it and don?t donate will still be waiting to see the finished film, so being part of a community that cares no matter if you donated $1, $2, or $200, getting the word out is amazing. People I talked to didn?t even know this part of the world existed and they didn?t know what was happening to it. Just being a little bit more aware.

A:?You?ve obviously been inspired by life, which is the highest plane of inspiration you can reach if you want to put it on a hierarchy, but what are some films you?ve seen that have inspired you to do this and how you?re going to do it?

DB:?The answers simple actually, the inspiration came from a feature film I saw in theaters that didn?t have anything to do with the environment. There?s this movie called?Breaking Upward?which was made with a $20,000 dollar budget and the people who made the film acted in it and all their friends helped them, which is part of the larger movement that is going on now, which is what Stony Brook is basing their whole program around; making your own film without having to go through a studio or sell your script. I think it?s that movement that?s inspired me and all of my friends who are doing this to just do it. Instead of waiting for someone to tell you to do it or tell you it?s okay to do it, just do it. That?s the trend and I?m happy to be apart of it. There?s also this film called?Craigslist Joe?about this guy who decided to drop everything for 30 days and just live off of Craigslist, people who would let him crash at their place for the night, volunteer jobs, dates, everything. He had no money, no phone numbers in his phone, no nothing, and it was just this idea this guy had and I think he?s my age, and he just did it. He?s not a filmmaker or anything like that but at the end he had this really inspiring video, it wasn?t perfect but I like seeing things like that, where I can see myself doing it and see how the film is made. These little movies that you can wrap your head around the whole thing is really helpful, cause if it?s a giant Hollywood movie it?s like ?oh my god there?s millions of people, and millions of dollars involved in this?, it?s the small stuff like Breaking Upwards and?Craigslist Joe?that say ?hey, I?ve got a group of five friends, we can do this!?. As far as environmental films go I saw The Cove, An Inconvenient Truth, Forks Over Knives,?what?s that giant one about food?

A:?Food INC.?

DB:?Yes that?s it! I just enjoy documentaries a lot so I would watch all of those cause I really like school and being in classes. There were times in my life when I wasn?t a student and I took documentary?s as kind of sitting in on a lecture.

A:?What are other ideas for film that you have bouncing around in your head?

DB:?Okay I have two ideas that I?d really like to make happen within? the next couple of years. I am a previously extreme struggler of social anxiety. So I suffer from panic attacks and was an agoraphobic for a couple of months when I was younger, and I think that a lot of people don?t acknowledge their own anxieties, because there?s a huge stigma that if you?re weak, than society does not value you. I?m really into life science right now, so I?d love to do a mini doc about people who have suffered with anxiety, maybe like a web series, or something manageable, but also something that keeps coming where I can interview new people I want to talk to about this, so I might want it to continue. Something about bringing anxiety to life. Or even teaming up with one of my good friends in the program who is a psychotherapist, and maybe even making videos for people who are reluctant to go to therapy or afraid to talk about it. The other thing I want to do is a film about my parents. My family is Jewish and on holidays everyone gets together for two hours and then rushes out the door. I don?t really know my family that well, not even my nuclear family, like I don?t know if they believe in God, or what the best thing that ever happened to them is, I don?t know if they?re happy, I don?t know anything about them. My older sister and I are a bit estranged also, and my middle sister is always traveling and I don?t get to see her that much, so I really want to sit down with my family and ask them the questions? that you somehow know about your friends, but never got to know about your family. I think it?s an opportunity to get my family together to do something, and we don?t get together much so there?s that, and maybe curing old wounds but really I?m just curious to get to know my family while we?re here.

A:?Well, you sound like a regular Martin Scorsese.

Jill Brooke: Nora Ephron Taught Us How to Live and Die

In reflecting on all the people who passed away this year, I am thinking of Nora Ephron and how this witty, wise and loving woman taught us not only how to live but also how to die.

I last saw Nora Ephron earlier this year at the memorial for best-selling author Charla Krupp, who shocked her circle of loyal devoted friends by never divulging her terminal illness. While Nora was behind me as we signed our names on the guest book, a few friends, with tear rimmed eyes, came up to us questioning how anyone could keep a terminal illness secret or would want to make that choice. "We live in the age of the Internet where everyone tells everyone everything," cried one friend.

"The credit should go to a good marriage," I said, referring to Charla's partnership to Time magazine's theater critic Richard Zoglin. "How lucky was she that her husband's love was enough that she didn't need anyone else."

I then turned to Nora and for some inexplicable reason said, "Don't you agree?" In owl-like black sunglasses, the celebrated writer of romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally nodded her head and whispered, "That is so true." Only now I realize she most likely was thinking of her own husband, writer Nick Pileggi, whose quiet unwavering support gave her the protective cocoon to keep her secret intact -- even from her children.

As Frank Rich wrote in his New York Magazine piece about Ephron, people have legitimate reasons to want to keep pending death a secret. He said his friend may have not wanted "her illness to change the weather in any room she entered. She did not want to spend every day fending off an onslaught of concerned questions. She didn't want to be thought of as a lesser person. She did not want friends to see her falling apart."

Rich went on to share how at Ephron's memorial in New York City, her son Max Bernstein reflected on his mother's unexpected gift for not divulging the seriousness of her illness.

"I think that she just kept quiet so the rest of us could keep enjoying being with her as much as possible," Max said at the memorial. "All of those moments would have been bittersweet or sanctimonious, flanked by an asterisk, leading to a footnote that says, "There aren't many of these left." Then he added, "I am so glad they weren't that way."

But it couldn't have been that way for Max or his brother Jacob without Nora's husband Nick Pileggi by her side. Yes, this man who she married in 1987 was a good fella in the best of ways.

As a culture, we often focus on the lust and laughs of new marriages. But want to see passion at its sexiest? For me, it is witnessing the long-term marriages of couples whose passion for loyalty and the respect for their history together endures so that each spouse can feel safe and not judged during times of weakness. Long term marriages are the real love stories of our time. Just wish there were more of them.

Lucky Nora had Nick to discuss the challenges of squeezing joy from life with rationed time. She had him to give her the chicken soup when treatments made her sick and cranky. She had him to cry with at night when the fear of the unknown choked her with anxiety. Nora had Nick to soothe her apprehensions so her public face could still be smiling. So she could still be working. So she could still be living the life she wanted. So she could be, as she often said, "the heroine of your life, not the victim."

Friends of course lamented not being able to say farewell. But as Bruce Feiler wrote in the New York Times, farewell conversations are usually awkward and forced. What do you say after goodbye? Sorry this happened and it sucks? As I've witnessed, the dying often feel obligated to make their friends feel better about their condition. It becomes stressful for them. They only feel safe with a trusted few.

Oddly enough, Nora Ephron, the woman who eagerly doled out delicious recipes for Thanksgiving dinners, never did share the one recipe many covet: The recipe for a loving devoted marriage. With the divorce rate hovering towards 50 percent, few will have built a reservoir of good times to not need anyone else when the end of life comes.

In fact one of Nora Ephron's greatest successes ends up proving not only that in divorce, wife can go on, but that she can marry well too.

January 10, 2011 8:30am To: Parents/Teachers, From: May Mitchell Do you have a child who you wish was a more confident reader, writer and speller?

If you have a child in the U.S, Australian or New Zealand school system, you know our educational system is struggling behind other developed countries. Kids are getting passed through without even basic reading, writing and spelling skills to help them to succeed in life.

The core mission of every junior school should be to develop a love of reading in each student. But it isn?t. Many children end up hating reading (especially boys)?and are afraid of it.

We?re told that if learning basic reading doesn?t involve lots of whole language ?stab in the dark? reading aloud, if it isn?t a big picture-book-a-minute or if there?s no catchy songs, kids can?t learn.

This is simply not true. Even with this new glitz, too many children are still not learning it.

Because it doesn?t work. If your child isn?t lucky enough to have a superstar teacher, their education suffers.

The only method absolutely positively guaranteed to get kids mastering sounds and words quickly and easily is the old fashioned way?

?through spaced multi-sensory repetition, hearing, seeing, saying and writing of the basic sounds and words of English with repetition over a short time period?

Venezuela VP in Cuba to visit ailing Chavez

HAVANA (AP) ? Venezuela's vice president arrived in Havana to visit President Hugo Chavez as he recovers from cancer surgery, Cuban official media said early Saturday.

Communist Party newspaper Granma published online a photo of Vice President Nicolas Maduro being greeted at the airport in the Cuban capital by the island's foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez.

"From there, (Maduro) went directly to the hospital where President Hugo Chavez Frias is receiving treatment to greet his family members and Venezuelan Science and Technology Minister Jorge Arreaza Monserrat, and to discuss with doctors the adequate moment to visit the President the same day," the paper said.

Granma added that Maduro was accompanied by Venezuelan Attorney General Cilia Flores.

The previous night in Caracas, Venezuela, Maduro did not specify how long he would be away but said Energy Minister Hector Navarro would be in charge of government affairs in the meantime.

Maduro's trip comes amid growing uncertainty about Chavez's health.

The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since undergoing his fourth cancer-related surgery Dec. 11, and government officials have said he might not return in time for his scheduled Jan. 10 inauguration for a new six-year term. There have been no updates on Chavez's condition since Maduro announced Monday night that he had received a phone call from the president who was up and walking.

Maduro is the highest ranking Venezuelan official to visit Chavez since the surgery. Bolivian President Evo Morales traveled to Cuba last weekend in a quick trip that only added to the uncertainty surrounding Chavez's condition. Morales has not commented publicly on his visit or even confirmed that he saw Chavez while he was there.

Earlier Friday, Maduro read a New Year message from Chavez to Venezuelan troops, though it was unclear when the president composed it.

"I have had to battle again for my health," Chavez said in the message. He expressed "complete faith in the commitment and loyalty that the revolutionary armed forces are showing me in this very complicated and difficult moment."

A group of opposition candidates demanded Friday that Maduro provide an official medical report on Chavez's health. Lawmaker Dinorah Figuera said the country needs "a medical report from those who are responsible for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of the president."

"The Venezuelan people deserve official and institutional information," Figuera told Venezuelan media.

Before leaving for Cuba, Chavez acknowledged the precariousness of his situation and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice president if a new presidential election was necessary.

A legal fight is brewing over what should happen if Chavez, who was re-elected in October, cannot return in time for the inauguration before the National Assembly.

National Assembly Diosdado Cabello insisted Monday that Venezuela's constitution allows the president to take the oath before the Supreme Court at any time if he cannot do it before the legislature on Jan. 10.

Opposition leaders argue the constitution requires that new elections be held within 30 days if Chavez cannot take office Jan. 10. They have criticized the confusion over the inauguration as the latest example of the Chavez government's disdain for democratic rule of law and have demanded clarity on whether the president is fit to govern.
