Corbin Bernsen played divorce lawyer Arnie Becker in the 1980s show L.A. Law. A full 15 years after the show?s last episode, a?Virginia-based company that provides marketing services for law firms hired him as a spokesman. According to Bernsen, he agreed to a five-year deal in 2009 with Innovative Legal Marketing?and was promised $1 million.
Last summer, Innovative ditched Bersen, saying the ad campaign was a failure, except here in New York, where Arnie Becker is, apparently, still a thing.
Bersen?filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit in October; Innovative?countersued in November, alleging that Bernsen?embarrassed?the company and its clients, all personal injury firms, by disparaging lawyers in a TV sketch, among other things.
Now, Bernsen is asking a federal judge in New York to enforce a subpoena against personal injury firm Parker Waichman Alonso LLP (now Parker Waichman), which featured Bersen in?television,?billboard?and phone book ads.
According to Bernsen, New York-based Parker Waichman was instrumental in spiking the sponsorship agreement. The motion says?Jerrold?Parker, the firm?s senior partner, ?owns or controls? the Bernsen ad campaign. The subpoena seeks documents related to the firm?s use of Bersen ads, its relationship to Innovative and the decision to terminate the agreement.?The motion was filed last week in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Bersen?s lawsuit seeks $668,000. Innovative says Bernsen owes it $600,000. Neither party immediately responded to Law Blog?s request for comment. Jerrold?Parker declined to comment.
GlobalEnglish launches the 2012 Business English Index
It?s time to change how you think about English in the global workplace. Why??Because our newindex that measures Business English proficiency in the workplaceuncovered the fact that a worldwide lack of Business English proficiency is threatening the productivity of companies, industries and country-specific economies.

Share the Business English Index Infographic
The infographic above gives you a snapshot of this year?s results. You?ll see that some of the highlights include:
The overall average Business English proficiency level is 4.15 (a drop from 4.45 in 2011), which illustrates the fact that Business English skills at global companies aren?t sufficient to meet today?s business requirements.
Four out of ten international workers tested can?t understandbasic information on conference calls or read or write emails in English.
The struggling economic powers of Japan, Italy and Mexico, and the fast-growth emerging market of Brazil, performed below a basic Business English level?a severe disadvantage when competing in the global marketplace.
The BEI score for global workers in the U.S. declined from 6.9 to 5.09 since the 2011 BEI benchmark. This is attributed to a majority of test takers being foreign-born engineers and scientists.
It?s highly likely that the inability of your company?s employees to communicate in English is having a real impact on your company?s business performance. And with 92% of global employees reporting that English is required or important for their jobs, companies competing in the global economy should see this?issue as critical to their high performance?that can no longer be ignored. The BEI?reinforces the fact that there is a?very real need for companies to have the right Business English development and support tools to successfully improve global performance. Today, we?re proud to be the only provider that offers a truly comprehensive solution that addresses 100% of customer organizations? needs to create immediate performance gains and long-term proficiency improvements.

Dr. John Carpten co-chairs panel discussion at AACR Annual Meeting 2012
CHICAGO -- Because cases of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) are so genetically different, whole-genome sequencing is needed to detect the subtle molecular differences that might point to specific treatments for individual patients.
Dr. John Carpten, Ph.D., head of the Integrated Cancer Genomics Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), will deliver that message along with other preliminary findings about whole-genome sequencing of TNBC at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2012, March 31-April 4, in Chicago.
"Every TNBC tumor we interrogate is genomically unique," said Dr. Carpten, who is part of an unprecedented and ongoing clinical trial involving the whole-genome sequencing of 14 TNBC tumors. Whole-Genome Sequencing, spells out all of the nearly 3 billion DNA molecules found in human cells, allowing unprecedented scrutiny of patients' genetic codes.
Dr. Carpten will co-chair an AACR panel, Concepts and Challenges in Bringing Next-Generation Sequencing to the Clinic. Dr. Stephen B. Gruber, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., and the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan will co-chair. Other panelists include Giselle L. Sholler of the Van Andel Research Institute and Victor E. Velculescu of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. The panel is set for 10:30 a.m. EDT April 2 at Chicago's McCormick Place convention center.
TNBC is unlike the nearly 80-90 percent of other breast cancers, which are driven by the hormones estrogen (1), progesterone (2), or too many receptors of the HER2 gene (3). Testing negative for all three means the cancer is "triple-negative."
Estrogen- and progesterone-driven breast cancers can be treated with hormonal therapy, while the drug Herceptin (trastuzumab) targets HER2 receptors.
But there have been no sure-shot treatments developed for TNBC, mainly because these cancers display a startling lack of uniformity, or heterogeneity, in their molecular make up.
"Whole-genome sequencing is enabling us to zero in on the specific challenges presented with each individual TNBC tumor, advancing a 'personalized medicine' approach that helps guide the treatment of each patient," said Dr. Carpten.
Based on mutations uncovered by sequencing, physicians recommend that their patients enter treatment protocols for either existing drugs or for new agents being evaluated in pharma-sponsored clinical trials.
Investigators are sequencing germline and tumor DNA to identify genomic alterations including point mutations, insertions/deletions and structural events such as translocations. RNA sequencing also is performed on the tumors, along with tissue from age- and ethnicity-matched normal breast controls, to obtain insights on gene expression differences.
This clinical study is being conducted in collaboration with US Oncology Research, with support from Life Technologies Corporation.
"This is among the largest studies of a single tumor type in which whole genome sequencing is being used to identify potential options for targeted treatment," said Ronnie Andrews, president of medical sciences at Life Technologies Corporation. "We are very pleased to help support this study, which is providing key insights into how sequencing can best be used in the clinic."
The theme of the 2012 AACR meeting is "Accelerating Science: Concept to Clinic," reflecting the strides and breakthroughs being made by cancer researchers and the impact they are making on global health. The conference will emphasize the synergy between basic, clinical and translational research that lead to effective cancer therapies and prevention strategies.

Kansas coach Bill Self, previously awarded Sporting News' Coach of the Year honors, added to his hardware collection Sunday when he was voted Naismith Men's College Basketball Coach of the Year.
Self, whose Jayhawks will play Kentucky in the NCAA championship game Monday night, becomes the third Kansas coach to win the award from the Atlanta Tipoff Club, joining Larry Brown (1988) and Roy Williams (1997).
Self beat out Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, Kentucky's John Calipari and Missouri's Frank Haith for the Naismith award, which was voted on by a nationwide panel of journalists, coaches and administrators.
"This is a terrific honor. When you think of postseason awards, anything that has (James) Nasmith?s name in front of it is a huge award and certainly I'm very proud of this," Self said in a statement. "It is a reflection of how our team performed all year long. There are so many good coaches out there to choose from but I am honored they picked me."
Self, in his ninth season at KU, led the Jayhawks to a 31-7 record and a record eighth consecutive Big 12 regular-season title. He is 269-52 at KU and 476-157 overall, including the 2008 national championship.
