Video from a Cornelius business shows auto theft suspect

Davidson Police have used a security video to come up with a partial description of a suspect in two auto thefts and at least 22 auto break-ins early Sunday and early Monday around town. And they are offering a $1,000 reward through Crime Stoppers for information that helps lead to an arrest in the case.

The security video, from a business on North Main Street in Cornelius, shows a white male, about 5 feet 6 inches or 5 feet 8 inches, unloading a bag of items from the trunk of a Volkswagen Passat that stolen from Dogwood Lane in Davidson early Monday. The man is wearing a dark top, possibly an automotive or college logo jacket, and talking on a mobile phone.

The video was shot around 4 a.m. in the rear parking lot of MoistureFree Warrantee, 20306 North Main St. The stolen Passat was recovered there Monday. The suspect or suspects found the car?s key in another unlocked car nearby.

In the other weekend car theft, someone stole a Toyota Corolla early Sunday from Kindertson Drive in the Davidson Woods neighborhood, off Beaty Street. The thief or thieves found the keys in the car. That car was later recovered near the Cornelius public library branch.

Police said the vehicles in all the break-ins this weekend were unlocked. Police are reminding residents to lock their cars and remove valuables.

Police chief Jeanne Miller said Tuesday that police now have a list of at least 22 auto break-ins from the two nights.

INFORMATION WANTED

As police investigate, they?re offering a $1,000 reward through North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-896-7867.
