Denying any link between the HPV vaccine and promiscuity, the Canadian newspaper with the second-highest circulation has called upon Catholic schools in Calgary to administer the vaccine to fifth-grade girls.
?Other publicly funded Catholic school boards in Alberta, and across Ontario (with the exception of Halton region), support the vaccine, which is funded by the federal government,? The Globe and Mail stated in an editorial. Calgary Catholic school trustee ?must show leadership and adaptability and choose to protect children ? rather than risk being forced to.?
Catholic-school officials in Calgary have indicated that they are reconsidering their previous refusal to allow the vaccines in parochial schools. Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary had argued that parents are free to have their daughters vaccinated elsewhere if they wish, but advocates of the HPV shots protest that most parents will not take the initiative if the shots are not administered in schools.
