Sydney launches $4.3M project to boost renewable energy ? News ...

The C40 city of Sydney has?announced?the launch of the largest building-mounted solar project in Australia, committing to install solar photovoltaic panels across 30 sites citywide, beginning with the Sydney Park pavilion. With a total peak electrical capacity of 1.25 megawatts (MW), the solar project is expected to reduce the city?s carbon pollution by as much as 2,250 tonnes.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore?said?the project was an important step in reaching the city?s environmental goals:

?We are committed to tackling climate change and driving down carbon pollution. The City has one of the most ambitious targets of any government in Australia ? a 70 per cent reduction in pollution and 30 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.The City is getting on with the job. These solar panels produce no pollution when generating electricity ? unlike coal-fired power, which is responsible for 80 per cent of the city?s carbon pollution.?

What?s more, the project economics are compelling, thanks to steep reductions in the cost of solar panels and favorable pricing on any surplus power they produce. As a result, the City was able to contract nearly twice the amount of solar PV for less than half the cost than originally envisaged in 2010; through electricity sales, it expects to lower the cost of cutting carbon pollution by a further 50 per cent, a city official said.

The solar project is in keeping with the sustainability objectives specified in Sydney?s?Sustainable Sydney 2030 Vision?to promote a green, global, and connected city. As part of this vision, Sydney identified the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by building a network of green infrastructure to provide clean energy and reduce energy demands.

UK's Barclays looks to move on from Libor scandal

LONDON (Reuters) - Barclays reports third-quarter results on Wednesday, with new chief executive Antony Jenkins aiming to restore some stability after a tumultuous summer for the UK bank dominated by fallout from the Libor interest rate rigging scandal.

Jenkins, appointed CEO at the end of August, has taken over from Bob Diamond, who resigned after Barclays was fined for its part in manipulating the Libor benchmark interest rate. Investors are looking for clues on how radical the new CEO will be in shaking up the bank.

Jenkins, due to unveil a full strategic plan in February, is expected to focus more on retail banking and less on riskier investment banking but the shift could be gradual as the latter provides the bulk of the bank's profits.

Barclays is expected to report an adjusted third quarter pretax profit broadly in line with analysts forecasts of 1.7 billion pounds ($2.7 billion). Analysts say it is in a stronger position than rivals to cope with troubled euro zone economies and tougher finance sector regulations.

Swiss bank UBS unveiled plans on Tuesday to fire 10,000 staff and wind down its fixed income business. Barclays and Deutsche Bank stand to benefit from UBS's retreat. Deutsche Bank's investment bank produced record third quarter revenue and helped lift group profit by 20 percent.

Barclays has already warned it will take a 700 million pound charge in the third quarter for the mis-selling of payment protection insurance. It is also expected to take a 1.1 billion pound accounting-related hit on the value of its own debt.

The bank suffered another blow this week when a High Court Judge ordered it to stand trial over damages stemming from Libor manipulation - the first such case to be heard in a British court.

The case relates to the mis-selling of interest rate swaps to small businesses, for which Barclays has already set aside a 450 million pound provision, a number which analysts now believe could rise further.

Barclays Chairman Marcus Agius will step down on Wednesday, handing over to David Walker, who has said he will work closely with Jenkins to shake up culture and reshape the bank.

American consumers overvalue US-produced apparel, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? In today's globalized economy, a large percentage of apparel products are multinational products as raw materials are produced, transported and assembled in different countries. However, consumers have little information about where and to what extent their apparel is produced domestically or overseas. Now, University of Missouri researchers have found that American consumers place a much higher value on apparel produced entirely in the U.S. with U.S. raw materials as opposed to products produced partially or entirely overseas. The value is so high, in fact, that MU experts worry it could be damaging to U.S. apparel manufacturing businesses and the overall economy.

In a study published in Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Jung Ha-Brookshire, an assistant professor in the textile and apparel management department in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at MU, surveyed American consumers to determine the value they place on apparel produced in different countries. She showed participants a cotton shirt, told them it was made in China, and said it sold for $40 in retail stores. She then showed them the same piece of clothing and told them it was made in the U.S. with U.S. cotton. The study participants valued the U.S. cotton shirt at $57, which is more than 42 percent higher than the same shirt produced in China. Ha-Brookshire says this demonstrates a troubling trend for American consumers.

"Americans tend to severely overvalue apparel produced entirely in the U.S.," Ha-Brookshire said. "This is concerning because if Americans place higher values on these U.S. products, they perceive those products to be too expensive and are less likely to buy them, opting instead to buy similar Chinese-made products perceived to be more in their price range. To help U.S. apparel businesses create and maintain domestic jobs, American consumers need to have a realistic understanding of the value of apparel made in the U.S."

One positive finding in Ha-Brookshire's study was that American consumers do value apparel made with U.S.-grown cotton, even if the finished goods are manufactured overseas. When she showed the survey participants the same cotton shirt and told them it was made in China from U.S. cotton, participants valued the shirt at $47, or 17 percent higher than a shirt with only a "Made in China" label. Ha-Brookshire says this increased value is not large enough to be prohibitive for consumers.

"U.S. cotton growers can utilize these findings by better indicating what apparel is manufactured from their cotton," Ha-Brookshire said. "Currently, retailers are only required to indicate where the apparel was manufactured or sewn, but if consumers could see that apparel produced in China was made with U.S. cotton, they would probably be more likely to purchase it."

Ha-Brookshire also will present her research in November at the Textile Product Labeling Summit at the University of Missouri. The summit will consist of discussions among national policy makers, researchers, consumer advocates and industry leaders about important topics regarding current textile product labeling practices and regulations.
