When OmmWriter appeared on the Mac, I wondered what the fuss was about. OmmWriter is one of those ?distraction-free? writing apps which block out everything except the text you?re working on. OmmWriter went one step further than the usual full-screen mode, adding in calm, meditative background music to the mix.

The app was fine, but if you can?t ignore a few open windows on your computer while you?re writing, it might be time to pick another job, or pick up some ADD meds.

Now OmmWriter has come to the iPad, where it makes a lot more sense. While I still don?t buy into the distraction-free thing, I do appreciate a minimal interface on the iPad?s little screen, especially with the keyboard taking up half the space. OmmWriter actually uses a custom keyboard, as you can see in the screenshot above.

This keyboard can be made bigger or smaller by pinching in and out, and can even be dragged up the screen to sit a little higher. You can also choose between QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ layouts, and the keyboard makes a quiet click or chime when you press a key (this is configurable).

Speaking of sound, you can choose from the same tranquil background music as in the Mac version, and you can also change backgrounds between various relaxing scenes. Some of these even move, like the snowy landscape option above.

I got pretty excited, too, when I pasted in a chunk of text and saw it show up behind the keyboard. This seems to have been a bug, though, as it disappeared when I started editing. It would be a nice feature, letting you see more text as you write.

OmmWriter looks pretty good, and sounds even better. But hard-core writers may want to wait a while. The current iPad version doesn?t have Dropbox support (you have to e-mail your documents as TXT or PDF files to get them out), and there are none of the fancier navigation options (tapping margins to move the cursor, for instance) found in the latest second-gen iPad text editors.

Still, that?s not the point. OmmWriter is supposed to be simple and beautiful, and judged on those criteria, its a winner. OmmWriter is available now for $5.

Start-up BlueStacks has emerged from stealth mode to wow the world with software that lets Windows PCs dual boot with Android.

The Campbell, Calif. company was thrown into the spotlight this week when Citrix announced during its Synergy 2011 user conference that it would be embedding BlueStacks into its desktop virtualization software, Citrix Receiver. A beta version of the BlueStacks feature is slated to be available with Receiver around the third quarter. But that's merely the news that gained BlueStacks instant celebrity status. Users will also soon be able to get BlueStacks on other devices. Eventually, the company intends to have a runtime version available directly to end users, too, although it is first selling its wares only to OEMs.

BlueStacks is the power behind the dual-boot ViewSonic ViewPad 10 Pro, which features Windows 7 and Android. BlueStacks runs Android in an x64 hypervisor. Android apps can appear either as an icon on the Windows desktop, or within a full Android environment. The software supports mouse and keyboard input, as well as multi-touch input. Android applications can run in Windows and be launched by shortcuts, just like a Windows app.

Of course, Android apps have been able to run on Windows through emulation for quite some time, with all the performance degradation that entails. But BlueStacks has taken the open source OS and built a native x86 Android runtime environment that it says will perform as well on a Windows machine as any Windows app. BlueStacks isn't the first to try and port Android to another OS. Canonical put in a toe in the water a couple of years ago, trying to bring Android to Ubuntu Linux, but ultimately, it never managed to create a production quality stack and that project faded from the spotlight.

But with OEM partnerships blossoming, such as the ones with Citrix and Viewsonic, and a new influx of $7.6 million in Series A financing from a handful of VCs, BlueStack is positioned for success.

The tool is of particular interest to Windows 7 tablet makers, as it gives users of such tablets access to the vast-and-growing Android marketplace. The BlueStacks software includes access to Android apps from Amazon?s AppStore and other app stores like GetJar and SlideMe through an "Apps" broker service. All apps accessible via the broker are guaranteed to work on Windows PC devices, the company promises, and apps purchased from Amazon can be shared across multiple PC and phone devices, it says. However, the software doesn't yet offer access to Google's Android Marketplace, because for now Google only allows apps from there to be downloaded to ARM-based devices, the company says.

BlueStacks will support Honeycomb, too, the company says, once Google opens that code and it works its way onto end users devices.

Announcements of more OEMs using BlueStacks are trickling out now, with news expected at the upcoming Computex event.? An Alpha version of the downloadable software could be available as soon as this summer. BlueStacks is collecting names of those interested in testing its Alpha code on its website.

Twitter has just rolled out a nifty little feature. Now on anyone?s profile, when click on the ?Following? link, you?ll be able to see exactly how they see Twitter. In other words, you can see the same timeline of tweets that they see when they?re looking at their main feed.

It?s a cool feature that makes sense from a discovery standpoint. If you know I?m a power Twitter user that probably follows a bunch of good people, you can now quickly scan the tweets those people send out and see which ones you want to follow.

This is a similar concept to what News.me does for news stories. There, you look at a person?s profile and can see the shared links that they see in their Twitter stream. (It?s also worth noting that Twitter actually had this feature back in the day but shut it off a number of years ago.)

The old ?Following? option (a list of users another user follows) is still there under the ?People? tab. Here, you?ll also find a ?You Both Follow? area, which is nice.

It?s important to note that you won?t be able to see protected tweets from users you don?t follow, obviously. Also worth noting: the feature doesn?t show you exactly what I see since I see my own tweets, but Twitter removes those when you look my following stream (makes sense since I?m not actually following myself ? though I would, if I could).

The feature is still rolling out, so if you don?t see it just yet, don?t panic. Just wait longer. If you do see it, here?s my following stream.

Update: One more little discovery bonus. If you look at the upper right corner of the following page you?ll see a ?shuffle? icon. Hovering over this reveals the option to ?jump to someone you follow?. So you can jump between people you follow and find new people to follow from their streams.

Speaking of the theatrical performance, the overtly sexual routine between Mother Monster and a backup dancer had audience members saying, "Um, wow!" But they forgot all about the bump-and-grind when the duo descended into the stage at the end, with fans gasping audibly at their fall.

As that mom made her way out of Nokia (yes, she was in the house), one man tapped her on the shoulder and said, "We had your back." The woman responded, "I had to protect my baby!"

» After the show wrapped, Ryan Seacrest called the cameras over for one last order of business. With the confetti still falling and all the "Idol" finalists gathered onstage, the host told fans that this could all be theirs next season. "It's worth it, isn't it?" Seacrest asked a still-dazed Scotty. "You better believe it," McCreery smiled.
