Actor James McAvoy fears for the future of the British film industry, because he is convinced U.K. moviemakers are "dumbing down" to satisfy the American market.
McAvoy, who will next been seen in superhero blockbuster X-Men: First Class, believes British directors are making too many compromises and he is adamant simplifying scripts is "patronising" U.S. viewers.
He tells Britain's Sky News, "We dumb our movies down because we want Americans to understand them. The Americans watch it and go 'This is a really unsophisticated dumbed down movie. Why would we want this? Why do we like this? We don't.'
"It's like we're patronising them and short changing ourselves..."
But McAvoy insists Oscar-winning British movie The King's Speech proves intelligent U.K. films can be a success, adding, "I think the whole thing is to keep trying to make the best possible movie that you can and hopefully the cream rises to the top. And sometimes you know you look at something like The King's Speech, which is made for relatively little money compared to X-Men and it just keeps making money, making money, making money."
