Smithfield Village Council Meeting Brings Former Mayor to Tears

Mayor Ted Boyd found himself on the receiving end of irate resident, demanding some accountability of the village administrators after an audit by the state of Ohio found $60,000 missing from the village accounts.

About a dozen residents packed the council chambers.?

Former Mayor Patricia Freeland almost came to tears as she attempted to explain some of the accounting irregularities to the public.

"I happened to pick up the phone one day, and a lady from PERS said, 'You haven't paid PERS for seven years, and you better call IRS, 'cause I understand you haven't paid them." said Freeland.? "I went home appalled because I not only called IRS and PERS and the state, but not a thing had been paid to workers comp or anything for seven years, and when I questioned, they said, 'You fell under the radar.'"

"The former mayor finds herself involved in a minor, routine finding," village solicitor Bryan Felmet, "and for her to be lumped in with that other, bad stuff in there is not fair to her, and it's not what the report says."
