Amazon, Discovery Communications Sign Streaming Pact | The ...

Amazon Prime expanded its list of offerings on Wednesday, signing a licensing pact with Discovery Communications that will allow members to stream shows from Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and other cable networks owned by the company.

Among the programs that will now be available are past seasons of "Whale Wars," "Say Yes to the Dress" and "Dirty Jobs," Amazon said.

Among the other Discovery networks included in the deal are?TLC, Investigation Discovery, and the Science and Military Channel.

Since launching its Prime Instant Video service, Amazon has been busy signing content deals with the likes of Universal, CBS and FOX. The company said it now has more than 17,000 titles available for streaming.?

It is all part of leveraging Amazon's deep financial resources to launch a streaming challenger to Netflix and Hulu.?

Not that Wednesday's announcement substantially differentiates Amazon from the pack. Netflix has its own pact with Discovery that gives it access to many of the same programs.?

"Discovery Communications is committed to delighting audiences on all platforms supported by the right business model, and we are pleased to work with Amazon to help satisfy our existing viewers? curiosity and introduce new audiences to our engaging content,? said Rebecca Glashow, Discovery's senior vice president of digital distribution and partnerships, said in a statement.?
