Reignite Health and Fitness: Detox - Cleanse

I love the topic of debate: "detox". When we hear the word "detox" we think of the commercially advertised programs consisting of unrealistic claims, expensive powders and days of feeling hungry and deprived. I'm here to tell you that a detox does NOT have to be this way. In my studies I have read many books, two that caught my eye were "Hungry for Change" (James Colquhoun & Laurentine Ten Bosch) and "Clean" (Alejandro Junger). I have "The Gerson Therapy" on my list to read next, but that's a whole other blog!).

Think of detox as a ?reset? for your digestive system. It works so hard everyday; and plays a key role to your body's overall health; sometimes it just needs a little help to clean out and rest. It is great to reduce bloating, discover food intolerances & better yet ? kick food addictions! (by resetting the taste buds)? For example; I love my daily coffee & although coffee has been proven to be beneficial for many things ? my body and mind are addicted to the caffeine. It?s nice to have a rest from it once in a while and put a stop to the reliance on the buzz to ?wake up?. Don't worry, I still love coffee & haven't given it up! (Well, just for this week)

The?cleanse I am doing this week comes from the ?Hungry for Change? book/ DVD. It is not a fast, starvation or fake supplement type detox. It focuses on very clean eating and ensuring your body receives the nutrients it needs. It can be done for 3-7 days. I?m doing it for 5 because I have the house to myself. ?

I admit on day one I really want coffee (it?s Monday, I?m back at work & coffee is very much ingrained into my daily schedule). I also want my morning oats and am craving carbohydrates in the form of wheat. I am a big good carbohydrates eater!?I acknowledge that it is simply my body going through the motions of food cravings. I am not concerned because I know that after 5 days I can eat whatever I want instead of following a specific menu. I also know that after today, the cravings will go away ? this time frame changes for everyone depending on how your diet is already. This is a gentle detox, so the creators recommend starting it on a weekend so you can rest if you feel the need to.

At the end of the detox I expect to feel more energised, less bloated, less reliant on my coffee, uninterested in sugary foods?and experience improved mood.?I will also be even more in tune with my body and what it wants me to feed it - this helps the practise of intuitive eating... but more on that later. I will check back in along the way :)

Happy Monday!
