WINSTON-SALEM -- It's the flattest marathon in the state and the Southeast's only indoor marathon. On Sunday, dozens of runners competed for a good cause at the Indoor Insanity Marathon Relay and 5K hosted by Dynamite Endurance Events at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. All proceeds go to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help cure blood cancers.

"There are a lot of indoor marathons that are up in the Northeast, in the north where it's cold, and you can't run a marathon in the winter, but we wanted to do it backwards, cause it's hot here, you can't run a marathon in the summer," said Kathy Mills, an event organizer for Dynamite Endurance Events.

Lydia Hassell was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma the summer after she graduated college.

"I kind of was in denial for a long time, like there's no way that a 22 year old had cancer. It didn't make sense to me at all," Hassell said.

After six months of chemotherapy and continued screenings, Hassell said she's better than ever.

"I had my one year scans about a week ago and they came back clean, so I'm free! I'm good to go," said Hassell.

She spent Sunday morning cheering on runners like Bronek Czech, who traveled from Florida to participate in the run.

"Normally May is the end of the season for me and only because of the indoor character of this marathon, I decided to come here and do one more," Czech explained.

"I know these events [are] very difficult and hard to do, so the fact that all these people are willing to put in the time just makes me feel honored that people are trying to fight and find a cure," said Hassell.

Dynamite Endurance Events have two other athletic competitions on the books for this year. The events will be held in August and October in Greensboro. For more information visit: http://www.dynamitevents.org/main/.
