North Ridgeville
By Michael Fitzpatrick
It?s official. The ballots have been counted and residents with the nicest yards in North Ridgeville have been selected.
In total, five homes were selected as winners in the Garden Club of North Ridgeville?s CARE contest. CARE is an acronym for Curb Appeal Recognition Event. The winners for this year?s contest are Thomas Barber at 8672 Gatewood Drive; the Michael Freeman family at 9336 Stonebriar Lane; the Jay Hebert family at 38607 Country Meadow Way; the David Hoskins family at 6713 Stoney Ridge Road; and the Dale Simpson family at 32291 Center Ridge Road.
The winners all received a $25 gift certificate to a local garden center as well as a framed certificate and plaque. The five winners were honored at a Tuesday ceremony at the home of one of the 2011 CARE winners, Toni and Garry Krone.
In addition to the five winners, nine residents were cited for honorable mention recognition. They are the Richard Fuller family at 34320 Bainbridge Road; the Kantelas family at 5089 Park Trail Drive; the Sam LaPonza family at 37500 Barres Road; the Robert Mangan family at 34907 Cambridge Drive; George Mathiellis at 5336 Otten Road; the Frank Miller family at 6044 Creekside Lane; the Ken Schneider family at 9317 Stonebriar Lane; and the John Smedmack family at 6120 Hickory Trail.
?We congratulate these 2012 CARE winners and thank them for all their hard work,? said Glory Slupe, the chairperson for CARE.
A panel of seven judges picked out the winners, Slupe said. Nominations were accepted on the garden club?s website. The seven judges also picked out their own favorite yards, Slupe said.
The dry weather made judging the best yards difficult, Slupe said.
?It was difficult to do because the weather was crazy,? Slupe said. ?People?s yards were turning brown,? when judges stopped by to look at them. We took that into consideration. We think we picked some good houses.?
This was just the second year for the contest, Slupe said.
Also recognized for their work on the contest were CARE committee members Pat Casper, Evelyn Chutes, Carol Dennison, Beverly Herschman, Susan Kennedy and Diana Ostrander. Dorothy Black, Don Casper, Dan Herschman and Brenda Lett were also recognized for their work in connection with contest.
