Long days at the computer, slaving over a lengthy paper, can be bad for your eye health. I can remember a few times when a day spent typing left my contacts feeling like sandpaper.
Unfortunately, for many college students, we can?t avoid the hours spent at our computers. Poor lighting or glare from the computer screen can cause blurry vision, dryness, and itchy eyes. However, there are several ways to maintain proper eye health, despite this:
Take breaks AWAY from your computer screen. Plan to take your eyes off the computer (for at least five minutes) every hour or so. Let your eyes readjust to their surroundings.
Fix the lighting so there is no glare. Having a glare on your computer screen causes squinting which, in turn, often produces eye strain. Alter the lighting or the location of your computer to avoid this.
Use eye drops if need be. If you often find yourself with dry eyes, consider stashing a bottle of drops in your bag. This will keep your eyes moist.
Schedule regular eye exams. Inform your doctor of any changes in vision or eye problems. He or she will most likely be able to quickly help with any issues that may arise. Eye check-ups will ensure that any problems won?t go unnoticed.
Incorporate good eye care into your daily life and you?ll avoid more eye problems later on. You know the saying, ?An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!?
