Al Jazeera bids for rights to France's football audience

(MENAFN) Ligue 1, France's football league, said Monday that Qatar's Al Jazeera entered a bid for France's domestic TV rights for high profile football games, Reuters reported.

Al Jazeera will have to beat out Canal Plus, which currently owns the rights, and Orange, a subsidiary of France Telecom, to win the rights for 2012 to 2016. Al Jazeera outbid Canal Plus for the international rights to the games last month.

The league is depending on this year's bids to meet or surpass the current contract's yearly USD950.4 million. The French league is struggling financially after a drop in ticket sales and decreased revenues from the transfer market.

Last week, Qatari investors bought 70 percent of shares of Paris St Germain, a French Ligue 1 football club, from Colony Capital. Colony Capital kept 30 percent of the club.
