Flooded families rescue pets from storm water ? South Shropshire ...

Friday the 13th of July was definitely unlucky for some Radnorshire families, who despaired as water swept through their homes during another flash flood in the Knighton area.

Residents in the worst affected community of Heyope described sheets of water running down the hills after a massive thunderstorm just after 5pm.

The water caused a lot of damage getting into two houses, knocking down walls, and even washing small pets away.

At Mill Farm, Heyope, water completely ripped up a driveway and knocked down a wall, leaving concrete, stone and mud everywhere.

At Redwood, the residents of two houses were away when the storm struck but friends and neighbours just managed to save pet birds and animals from being washed away.

Jeni Saywell was in Cardiff when water got into the downstairs of her home. She returned to find wet carpets, logs floating everywhere, and lots of mud.

Tamsin Archer was away camping for the weekend with her mum, Darel Small, and son Theo, when they got a call from friends.

They arrived home at midnight after cutting their camping trip short.

Tamsin said: ?The water went right through the field where all the birds and animals were out in their runs and houses.

?There were 18-week-old baby ducks; three were very lucky to survive after they were found almost dead, but they were taken into the house to be warmed up and are now doing fine.

?I think some of the chickens learnt to swim.

?The guinea pigs and rabbits got very wet but were brought in and dried off using a hairdryer and put into indoor cages.

?Luckily, thanks to Lee Sutton and Duncan and Steph Powell, we only lost a few baby quail and a duck sitting on her eggs lost most of them.?

Even Russell, her mum?s pet crow, got his feet wet as water got into his cage.

The next day the whole area was covered in thick mud and debris.

At Cleobury Farm, Heyope, water came from three directions with a river going right through the sheep shed and into the stable where Lily, a four-year-old shepherding pony, was in a box resting due to a bad leg.

Mandy Lloyd said: ?She was rescued from nearly 4ft of water and was very lucky because a large wall had been knocked down by the water, some of which landed in her stable. All her tack was washed away.?

The farmhouse was also flooded, causing a lot of damage.

Fire-fighters from Knighton pumped water away from the house but it had gone straight through a workshop, causing lots of damage to tools and machinery.

Some of the roads near Heyope were still badly flooded on Sunday, and in some places large chunks of tarmac had been lifted by the water.
