2013 Nissan Pathfinder: Better Cargo Space and Mpg for Less Money

Yesterday, Nissan officially launched its overhauled 2013 Pathfinder. Touting the unibody ute as the "next-gen SUV," Nissan says it delivers the performance expected of a Pathfinder while upgrading its comfort, efficiency, and technology specs.

Probably the biggest news is the pricing, which will start at $28,270 (without destination). That?s $1020 less than the base 2012 model and, considering the amount of upgrades, mighty impressive. Nissan says it sees 2013 as a window of opportunity to steal sales from its segment competition, so the aggressive pricing makes sense. And if bare-bones isn?t your thing, consumers have a choice of four trims. (For instance, a 4-inch Advanced Drive-Assist display comes standard, but navigation and the luxuries come with the pricier trim packages.)

Overall, the 2013 Pathfinder is 500 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Nissan dropped the V-8 option, and all 2013 models will come with a 260-hp, 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine mated to the brand?s Xtronic CVT transmission. Less engine friction, lighter weight, and more aerodynamic styling largely account for the Pathfinder?s improved fuel efficiency, which Nissan says is 20 mpg city and 26 highway. (The vehicle has not been tested by the EPA yet.)

Keeping moms and dads in mind, the 2013 Pathfinder will be offered in 4?4 and 4?2 configurations, with a knob in the center console allowing 2WD, Auto, or 4WD selection. So don?t worry: No parking lot curb will prove too difficult when racing from band to soccer practice. Despite the smaller engine, the new Pathfinder can still tow up to 5000 pounds?you know, for all that urban hauling.

The 2013?s exterior styling is the most dramatic departure from the last model. Nissan ditched the boxy, compartmentalized look of the previous Pathfinder for the modern, windswept lines that are popular across the industry. Although the new styling makes the vehicle look a bit smaller, Nissan says it managed to carve out 79.8 cubic feet of cargo space, deceptively improving on the previous model. Inside, the new EZ-Flex seating provides easy access to the back. With just a flick of a lever, the rear seats tilt and slide all the way forward, making getting to the third row less of a chore?a major plus for the "savvy, cool parents" Nissan says is its target demographic. Make of that what you will.

Expect to see the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder in dealerships this fall.
