Wednesday: The overlooked books of 2012.
Thursday: Dan Kois? 15 favorite books.
Friday: The Slate Book Review Top 10.

Look, of course Katherine Boo?s Behind the Beautiful Forevers was amazing. It was the best book of the year or maybe the decade. But we can?t spend our entire December just praising Katherine Boo! Here are 15 other titles from 2012 that moved me, made me laugh, astonished me, and pleasantly confused me.

At the Mouth of the River of Bees by Kij Johnson. Wondrously strange and sinister stories of other worlds, future times, and everyday life gone haywire. Plus: A cat walks 100 miles through Heian-era Japan in the loveliest short story I read all year.

Down the Rabbit Hole by Juan Pablo Villalobos. A slim and comic debut novel from a Mexican writer written in the voice of a young boy growing up in the most absurd of circumstances: Tochtli, son of a drug baron, who just wants a pygmy hippo for his private zoo.

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. As his extraordinary mother lives through end-stage cancer, a lifelong reader discusses books with her every week. Touching and rigorously honest, this memoir is wise about the role reading plays in our lives and deaths.

Everything We Miss by Luke Pearson. A short, haunting comic about what happens when we?re not looking? the evil, the sadness, the anger, the despair. Gorgeously drawn and impeccably bleak.

Familiar by J. Robert Lennon. A spooky novel of lives never led in which a woman finds herself transformed, all at once, into a version of herself whose son never died.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. ?It?s not a cancer book, because cancer books suck,? explains 16-year-old Hazel about her favorite novel, whose author she?s desperate to meet. Though Hazel, the heroine of Green?s smart and funny YA novel, has cancer, this isn?t a cancer book either. It?s a romance and an adventure and a battle, and it?s great.

Jim Henson?s Tale of Sand by Ram?n K. P?rez. Forty years ago, Jim Henson wrote a fantastical screenplay about a man lost in a world of dreams. In this zippy, elegant book, cartoonist P?rez brings it to life with boundless energy and invention.

Lonesome Animals by Bruce Holbert. In the Okanogan Montains along the Canada-Washington border, a dangerous lawman hunts a more dangerous serial killer. This debut novel calls to mind early Cormac McCarthy in its relentless violence and frontier philosophy.

Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer. Up in space, a troubled genius builds the robots that will colonize the moon; on earth, his wife and autistic son struggle to achieve normalcy. The story seems familiar but this novel?s writing? vivid and unusual ? makes it fresh.

Son by Lois Lowry. The gorgeous, heartbreaking, and essential conclusion to the Giver quartet, this YA novel looks back at that original story?s dystopian community and a birthmother who goes in search of the son she lost.

Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis by Lauren F. Winner. Beaten down by loss, and failure, Winner struggles with whether religious faith still makes sense in her life. A serious but witty book of days that will be fascinating to anyone, Christian or not, interested in the life of the soul.

Swimming Studies by Leanne Shapton. An elliptical, well-wrought memoir of a life spent in pools by a talented illustrator, who once dreamed of Olympic gold and still feels most at home in the water.

Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon. Oh, did you forget that Michael Chabon, whose sentences are intricate and long and beautiful and hilarious, wrote a terrific novel about gentrification and soul music and race and love and a parrot? We should be counting our blessings.

Wolf Story by William McCleery. First published in 1947 and resurrected by the New York Review children?s collection, this ridiculously charming book is about a wolf, and a chicken, and a farmer, but really it?s about an exasperated, loving father in midcentury New York telling his very opinionated son a story.

Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone by Stefan Kiesbye. A sublimely creepy novel set in a village in Germany. It reads like the Brothers Grimm with historical resonance and a higher body count.

Because, y?know, we must all sacrifice for Gaia (1). Mary Katherine Ham summarizes at Hot Air:

It?s just a 100-year-old company and California?s only surviving cannery, a sustainable, family-owned operation employing 30 people. The Drakes Bay Oyster Company has been in a seven-year fight with the federal government and environmental groups over whether it?s 40-year lease would be renewed this week. The Lunny family, which owns the oyster farm, was among a group of families that sold their ranch lands to the National Parks Service in the 1970s to protect them from developers, with the understanding they would get 40-year-leases renewed in perpetuity. After buying and operating the oyster farm without incident? they were even featured as outstanding environmental stewards by the National Parks Service? the Lunnys learned in 2005 they were accused of bringing environmental damage to an area the NPS and environmentalists were anxious to designate as the nation?s first federally recognized marine wilderness.

And thus Secretary Salazar has decided to shut down a farm that accounts for 40% of the oyster harvest in California, in violation of the original lease agreement and on the basis of? ?science? driven by an environmentalist agenda:

The trouble started in 2005, when Kevin Lunny, a local rancher, purchased the oyster farm from Johnson Oyster Co. He was required to get a special-use permit from the California Coastal Commission, which had placed a cease-and-desist order on the property as a result of previous problems.

In the midst of those negotiations and discussions about extending the 2012 lease, the Park Service came out with accusations of environmental damage, setting off a series of dueling scientific reports.

?What has happened is the National Academy of Sciences has shown that all the claims made by the National Park Service are wrong,? Lunny said. ?It gives us a clean bill of health.?

Lunny and others claim Jon Jarvis, the Pacific West regional director of the National Park Service, deliberately misrepresented data to bolster his own ideological agenda.

Jarvis apologized Tuesday for mistakes that were made on the initial report but defended the Park Service?s handling of the science.

?They didn?t say our research was wrong. They just said it was incomplete,? Jarvis said. ?What there really is here is a disagreement among scientists about the level of impact on the environment. That does not mean that one side is guilty of misconduct.?

The battle intensified in 2007, when the Park Service issued a report claiming, among other things, that oyster farming reduced the number of harbor seals and damaged eelgrass beds.

Lunny, who is trying to persuade the Park Service to renew a 40-year occupancy agreement in 2012, was furious. His case was helped by Corey Goodman, a biological scientist who reviewed Park Service studies on oysters.

They accused Park Service officials of fabricating environmental problems to drive the oyster company off the bay where explorer Sir Francis Drake purportedly landed more than 430 years ago.

Be sure to read the whole article. At best, the Park Service study was incompetent; at worst, it was a hit job meant to serve a Green objective (2), rather than objective science. Whatever the truth, a venerable business has been wrecked, livelihoods ruined, and the economy of California?s rural north, which has already suffered terribly (3) at the hands of environmental extremists, takes another blow.

This is another example of Washington-as-Leviathan, where abstract policy goals (and big donor groups) come before the needs of individual people, and science is a tool to be used to reach that goal, rather than a source of information leading to a wise, just decision.

(And didn?t Obama want to depoliticize science? Never mind?)

Of course, in the midst of this sad story is some irony, too. The Lunny?s farm is near Inverness, in Marin County, which is infamous in its liberalism. While we don?t know how the people of the area voted in the last election, Marin as a whole went 75% for Obama. (For comparison, California overall voted ?only? 60% for the President.) Thus I think it?s safe to say a majority of the affected people likely were Obama voters.

How?s that for gratitude, folks?

That bit of snark aside, what?s happening here is unjust and needless, and one hopes that pressure from the public and Senator Feinstein?s office will find a way to undo the harm caused by Secretary Salazar?s arrogance. You can see a short documentary on the Lunny?s battle at Hot Air.

Afterthought: I suppose one can also take grim satisfaction at the thought of rich Bay-Area liberals having to pay more for their precious shellfish, given that Salazar?s decision will massively contract the available supply. Nah. They?ll never make the connection.

Footnotes:
(1) Except for the High Priests of the faith, such as Al Gore, who can jet around the globe as much as they need and just buy themselves absolution via the carbon credits scam.
(2) Of course, that?s S.O.P for Ken Salazar, who was found by a federal judge to have misrepresented the science in a report used to justify a moratorium on drilling permits in the Gulf after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
(3) Other than marijuana, now that logging, mining, and fishing have been all but killed. If you eliminate legitimate industries, people will turn to what they have to in order to survive.

Tips To Take Your Home Based Business To The Next Level | Bob ...

However, many of them seem to think that this is very difficult to do. If you know the right approach to working from home, you may already be in a good position to start a home based business. Read this article to find out how you can get started.

Learn how to expand you business by selling on the Internet. Many people only promote their businesses with their sites, but you should sell your products and services on your site as well. On various websites, registration can be completed for a minimal cost.

Consider hiring a professional accountant to deal with all of your business?s tax needs. This is vital because learning the different types of tax laws can remove time away from you which you can use for your business.

Try advertising your home based business through the internet. With a website your customers can browse with ease, whether designed by you or a professional, you will be more successful. It is important to offer your customers excellent site content with the ability to make purchases online where practical. Providing an avenue for them to remain in touch with you is also an important consideration. Find out more about how to create a successful website for your business.

In order to succeed at being a home business enterprise owner, you have to be able to take knowledge-based risks to broaden your horizons. Trying out new things will bring in new customers and improve profit. If you always keep the same routine, you will never know if something else would have done better.

Your home based business needs a business plan, even if it?s just something you?re doing on the side. Though your business may be small, that doesn?t make it any less of a business, so treat it like one! Have a clear goal in mind, and outline the materials you?ll need and the steps you?ll take to get there. Having a business plan improves your chance for success.

Design the layout of your office with ergonomics in mind. For example, choose a strategic spot on your desktop to place your laptop or your monitor. For instance, make sure you place your monitor or laptop in the correct place on your desk to assist in ease of use. You do not want to have to strain to see your screen because it could cause you injury. If you plan to spend a while working at your desk, make sure you purchase the best seat your money can buy. Purchasing an ergonomically correct keyboard and mouse can help avoid problems with your wrists. A budget worth about $200 can help you purchase a lot of key items.

Make sure that if you have a home day care business, you get help from another adult if you need it. Not having the proper amount of help will put you and the kids at risk as you try to keep them fed and under control.

Start by establishing a good plan and a budget for your business. This is just a starting point, you can always amend it later on or scrap it altogether. But the initial importance of your smart business plan cannot be overstated; nor can the many benefits it will provide. Update your business plan periodically.

It is a good idea to keep track of your business reputation, including reviews of your products and your website. You can get this information from reviews, asking others or searching for yourself. You may not like what you heard but it will always be helpful to setting you on the course to success.

Wear business attire when working at home. You might want to wear pajamas while working from home. As with any other job, you should dress for success. This makes you feel more professional so you?re as productive as you can be.

You should always save some of the money that you make in a year so that you can your taxes. You will need to save at least 20 percent of what you make so that you do not have to come up with it during tax season.

When you work at home, strive for the same type of self-care you would perform if you were working in a professional office environment. Being successful in a home business enterprise is very rewarding; however, make sure you still have your personal time despite not leaving the house. Make sure to do your hygiene every day, do not overindulge in snacking, and make it a point to get some exercise. Apply these tips to boost your self esteem and you?ll find that others hold you in higher esteem as well.

As was discussed earlier in this article, owning a home based business is a dream for many individuals. Sadly, most people do not know how to get on track with their own home enterprise. Use the advice found here to make that dream a reality, and be the proud owner of a profitable work from home business.

Make sure you keep records of all business expenses as this can help you save money. Keep track of your business expenses, including vehicle costs and internet. You can deduct a lot of these expenses from your taxes when you have a business of your own. Even if you think the amount is too small, include it anyway, instead of giving it to the government, claim it.

Police order toxicology tests on dead Russian whistleblower

LONDON (Reuters) - British police have carried out toxicology tests on the body of a Russian anti-corruption whistleblower whose mysterious death in England has put a new spotlight on Russian criminal groups entrenched in Europe.

Alexander Perepilichny, 44, moved to Britain three years ago and had been helping Swiss prosecutors uncover a shady Russian criminal group suspected of being involved in large-scale, cross-border tax fraud violations.

Police have struggled to establish the cause of his death since he suddenly collapsed and died near his home on an upmarket, heavily protected estate in Surrey, south of London, on November 10.

Following an inconclusive post-mortem on November 14, investigators conducted another examination of Perepilichny's body as well as toxicology tests.

"Toxicology tests are being carried out as part of the investigation," a Surrey police spokeswoman said on Friday, adding that it could take months to get the results.

"The death is being treated as unexplained and remains under investigation."

Although toxicology tests are often standard practice following inconclusive post-mortem examinations, the move has evoked memories of the 2006 death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko who died in London after drinking tea poisoned with radioactive polonium-210.

Perepilichny's case has shed new light on a multimillion-dollar tax fraud scheme that was originally uncovered by Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was jailed in 2008 by the Russian authorities on charges his colleagues say were fabricated.

In 2009, Magnitsky died in a Russian prison, provoking an international outcry and becoming a symbol of human rights abuse and corruption in Russia.

Perepilichny is the fourth person linked to the case to have died in unusual circumstances.

In 2010, he came forward with information linking Russian government officials to a tax fraud scheme involving a Swiss bank, a move that helped Swiss prosecutors open a far-reaching criminal investigation in 2011.

Britain is the chosen home for many Russians, some seeking employment opportunities or refuge from political persecution. But there are also fears that London is turning into a playground for Russian mobsters trying to avenge their former partners hiding abroad.

Russian officials have played down Perepilichny's link to the Magnitsky affair, which has strained Moscow's relations with the West and prompted the United States to push for a bill cracking down on Russian corruption.

"We cannot see any connection between the death of Mr. Alexander Perepilichny, the causes of which are yet to be established, and the so called 'Magnitsky case,'" the Russian embassy in London said in a statement.

Britain's Independent newspaper, financially backed by a Russian billionaire critical of the Kremlin, reported on Friday that Perepilichny received a warning a year ago that his name was on a hit list in Russia.

"It was like an order book," a source described as an acquaintance of Perepilichny told the paper.

"His name was in it."

Fine clothes could be made from slimy hagfish threads

10 hrs.

When threatened, ancient bottom-dwelling marine creatures known as hagfish can produce a milk-jug?s worth of gelatinous slime containing mucous and tens of thousands of protein threads. Researchers are investigating how to harvest those threads for use as petroleum-free textiles.

The protein threads secreted in the mucous of the ell-like hagfish have mechanical properties that rival those of spider silk, which is exceptionally strong for its weight and has the potential to out-perform petroleum-derived products such as Kevlar.

The problem with spiders is they ?cannot be farmed to yield high quantities of silk,? Atsuko Negishi, a research assistant in the integrative biology department at the University of Guelph, said in a news release. ?She?s leading the effort to make silky fibers from hagfish slime.

Her current research shows it is possible to make ?macroscopic? materials using proteins isolated from the slime. This isn?t enough to make the sort of fashionable bullet-proof body armor executives and celebrities wear on the streets of Bogot?, Colombia, but it?s a start.

Going forward, the team plans to study how to scale up production, as well as investigate how to use other hagfish proteins to make materials for medicine and industry.?

A paper on the research appeared earlier this fall in the journal Bio Macromolecules.

Fantastical comes to iPhone, makes appointment entry ridiculously easy

Fantastical comes to iPhone, makes appointment entry ridiculously easy

I have a love/hate relationship with Flexibits' Fantastical. There is absolutely no faster, easier, more human way to enter appointments into your calendar. And because of that, my calendar -- previously a wasteland -- is now bristling with appointments. My only saving grace was that Fantastical was bound to my Mac, and I couldn't use it when I was out and about, with only an iPhone in my pocket. But with Fantastical's terrible awesomeness coming to the iPhone, I can now fill up my calendar faster, easier, and more humanly than ever before on the go, and no matter where I am. I'm organized now. I have no excuse left not to be. Dagnabit.

If you haven't used Fantastical before, it fixes almost everything that's wrong with Apple's built-in, kludgy Calendar app. Instead of tapping and filling in appointment or event details, you just type in natural language phrases and Fantastical parses it and creates the entry. "Lunch with Leanna at 8", "movie on Saturday with Georgia", "call on the 28th with Phil and Kevin", Fantastical takes it all in and makes it just work. Like Siri, but with a type-driven, instead of voice-driven, interface. If you want to edit all the fine details you can do that as well, of course. But the point is you don't have to until you want to.

The iPhone version makes great use of the smaller (than Mac) display, presenting 2 perpendicular scroll views. On the top is a horizontally scrolling date list. Tap a date, go to that date. Tap the top bar, go to today's date. On the bottom is a list view of all your events. Tap an event, get the details to that event.

And Flexibits absolutely, positively, gloriously nailed the bi-directional scrolling in a way that just feels perfect. Scroll the dates and the events change, scroll the events and the dates change. Flick and they both whizz by in perfect synchronicity, always slowing and stopping on a full event break.

If you want to see a month view, just pull down on the dates and either peak at it, or keep pulling to switch completely. If you want to peak or go back, just pull down again. (It's a state-toggle gesture, not a window shade analog.)

To add an appointment, tap the + button and, as described above, simply write what you want to add. Appointments get added to your default calendar, but you can also tap Show Details and edit everything in a more traditional manner, including changing the calendar, adding repetitions, making events all-day, and more. If you're using the iCloud calendar or a Google calendar, or any calendar with sync, the event will propagate across your devices just as you'd expect.

There are a lot of other great little touches in Fantastical for iPhone as well, like how words animate and playfully saunter down from the entry field to the calendar. , and how, as you type times and dates, the calendar flips, also playfully, to the right page. No part of the user experience has been left unpolished or anything less than delightful.

With the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPod touch 5, you can also use the built in iOS voice dictation to get a Siri-like effect by simply saying your natural-language event phrase. That means Fantastical can actually handle natural language through speech or type, which is a huge advantage. (I've wanted Siri to handle text queries via Spotlight for a while now for just that reason -- sometimes it's easier to talk, sometimes quite inopportune.)

I've been using Fantastical for iPhone for a while now, and I haven't touched Apple's Calendar app since. It's been reverse Sherlocked -- Flexibits saw an opportunity where the built-in app wasn't meeting a need, and provided a compelling alternative.

That doesn't mean it's for everybody, however. To be as focused as it is, Fantastical leaves out some things as well. There's no landscape mode, no week view, and no a lot of other features that other calendar apps absolutely nail. For me, speed of entry and speed of lookup are the most essential element of an iPhone calendar app, and that's Fantastical's forte. For other users and use cases, different priorities will apply.

Like I said at the start, if you want the absolute fastest, easiest, most human way to get appointments into your calendar, you'll want Fantastical for iPhone.

Diabetes is a manageable disease

After a family backpacking trip a couple weeks later, he weighed 66.

"It came on pretty quickly," said Gildon, now 28, reflecting on what led up to his eventual diagnosis: diabetes.

He's among the 26 million people in the United States with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, which acknowledges November as American Diabetes Month.

The recently published Diabetes Report Card 2012 from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) listed Oklahoma as having had the highest increase in adult diabetes from 1995 to 2010, with nearly one in 10 Oklahomans having the disease.

Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose, or blood sugar, the CDC's report explained. With diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to use its own insulin effectively.

Glucose builds up in the blood and causes a condition that, if not controlled, can lead to serious health complications and even death, the report said.

At the time he was diagnosed, Gildon wasn't familiar with diabetes.

On the way home from that aforementioned backpacking trip, Gildon kept asking his parents to make pit stops every 20 or 30 minutes. He was also thirsty.

Eventually, he started feeling bad. After the family made it home, their physician said Gildon might have flu, then wrote him a prescription.

That evening, he became sicker still, and couldn't keep water or Sprite down. That's when his mother took him to the emergency room.

A normal glucose level is in the 80-100 range, Gildon said. That night in the hospital, his hit 999.

Signs and symptoms of diabetes can be subtle and increase over time, said Dr. Laura J. Chalmers with the Harold Hamm Oklahoma Diabetes Center at the University of Oklahoma, 4444 E. 41 St.

Those signs include being more thirsty, urinating more often, waking at night to drink and go to the bathroom, and weight loss, Chalmers said. The appetite may also be increased, and some people will have nausea and vomiting.

Gildon was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, or type 1 diabetes (T1D), one of the three most common forms of diabetes, according to the CDC. Another, type 2 diabetes (T2D), makes up for about 95 percent of diagnosed diabetes in adults; the third, gestational diabetes, develops and is diagnosed as a result of pregnancy in 2 to 10 percent of pregnant women.

With T1D, the body is unable to produce insulin, a hormone secreted by pancreas to regulate blood sugar, Chalmers explained. Treatment for T1D is insulin.

In T2D, there is insulin resistance, she continued. Treatment for T2D involves weight loss, dietary changes and medications that help the body secrete insulin and overcome the insulin resistance. In some situations, patients with T2D require insulin.

Onset of T1D is typically before age 20 but presentable from approximately 6 months of age into adulthood, Chalmers said.

Annette Jones was 24 and pregnant with her youngest daughter when she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

"When women get gestational, it usually goes away after delivery," said Jones, alluding to the 2 percent of women who remain diabetic after pregnancy.

Jones has had diabetes for 27 years, more than half her life. Like Gildon, she wasn't too familiar with diabetes, other than having family members who were diabetic - but she was too young to understand what that meant.

"I knew there was not a cure and that you had to take shots," she said.

Lori Maisch was 45 when she was diagnosed with T1D. She had lost 25 pounds from May to September that year - "all the yard work I had been doing," she thought.

Constantly thirsty and going to the bathroom every 15 minutes, even at night, Maisch finally attracted the attention of someone in a doctor's office: her neighbor, who noticed her "sweet odor."

"It's the same scent I smell on patients that have diabetes," Maisch recalled her neighbor saying. "That prompted me to make an appointment with my primary care physician, be tested and diagnosed."

More than one diabetes

Misconceptions abound regarding diabetes, Chalmers said.

For example, T1D is treated with insulin and carbohydrate counting, she explained. Patients with T1D should have a healthy diet but are allowed to have cake, ice cream and other sweets within reason - as long as they take their insulin to cover the carbohydrates in the food they consume.

Maisch used to be one of those folks with preconceived notions about diabetes, she said. Since her diagnosis, people assume she has T2D because she's an adult.

"Then they say, 'I thought that only happened to children,' " she said. "Some will say, 'Oh, if you eat right and exercise more, you can control it.' No, that's type 2 - I am insulin-dependent."

Or she might have people tell her she can't have certain foods, like birthday cake, refusing to cut her a slice because "you can't have it," Maisch said. "I just need to adjust my insulin to eat it."

Most people don't know that there is more than one kind of diabetes, Jones said. Others she's met don't think that it's a big deal because diabetics take insulin.

"They don't realize the deadly consequences that occur with this disease," she said. "I have actually had people say to me, 'You have diabetes? You're not even fat.' I could go on and on."

Sometimes, people with diabetes might have a change in mood, experiencing "highs and lows," as Maisch said.

"If I am having either, I can come across irritable or out of it," she said. "I don't mean to but can't help it sometimes. I've found a lot of people don't understand that part of the disease."

Having diabetes can be expensive, too. Even with insurance, the two insulin shots Maisch needs each month are $100 each. Plus, she has test strips and syringes to buy. In all, it's about $400 out of her own pocket each month.

"I used to be more impulsive," Maisch said, "but now am more mindful regarding my meals and making sure I have my T1 pouch - blood glucose monitor, test strips, glucose tablets, insulin, syringe - every time I leave the house."

It takes planning

Another challenge is always having to be more prepared than the average person.

Like if a buddy of his asks him to go on a spur-of-the-moment bike ride, Gildon has to know what his blood sugar is, possibly take extra food with him in case he takes too much insulin or exercises too heavily.

If he goes on a long trip, he has to think ahead in case his insulin pump breaks - what would he do then? Gildon has to have a back-up plan.

When he'd go on a Boy Scout camping trip, Gildon and his dad crafted a case out of PVC pipe for his insulin so he could keep it in his sleeping bag on freezing nights - and insulin doesn't freeze.

One of the main challenges for Jones was changing her eating habits, like cutting back on carbs.

"Simplicity is gone," she said. "I can't go anywhere - store, work, park, ride my bike - without a plan, a snack or juice, something to treat low blood sugar."

Jones has to have her blood monitor with her at all times, and she checks her blood at least four, sometimes eight times a day.

Like Gildon, she wears a pump 24-7. "It is still better than six to seven shots a day," Jones said - but added, "I don't feel free."

Such adjustments aside, a normal, active life is achievable for most diabetics.

Jones wanted to have another baby after her second daughter, but the doctor said it was "probably best" she didn't.

"This was 27 years ago, so that mentality has changed now," said Jones, who has three beautiful daughters.

"God worked everything out," she said. "Maybe not the way I had planned it, but just perfect anyway."

Stop diabetes before it starts

American Diabetes Month takes place each November in order to raise awareness of this disease.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), it is estimated that nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

To stop this disease before it starts:

Get moving. Physical activity lowers blood sugar and boosts your sensitivity to insulin. Research shows both aerobic exercise and resistance training can help control diabetes. The ADA recommends a half-hour of mild aerobic activity five times per week.

Eat more whole grains. White bread, white rice and potatoes have a high glycemic index, which can cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Whole grain foods help with diabetes prevention because they slow down carb absorption.

Limit your sugar intake. Be sure to read nutritional labels and steer clear of anything that lists sugar, sucrose, corn syrup or other sweeteners, such as evaporated cane juice or molasses, as one of the first ingredients.

Stop smoking. According to a Harvard School of Public Health study, smokers are about 50 percent more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers. New research shows that inhaling secondhand smoke may also lead to an increased risk of diabetes.

Get more sleep. Not getting enough sleep increases hunger, which leads to weight gain and, therefore, raises your risk of getting diabetes.

Check your glucose levels. The ADA recommends blood glucose screening for everyone age 45 and older. Generally, this testing is repeated every three years. But if you have known risk factors (like high blood pressure or obesity), discuss them with your doctor.

Support for diabetes

After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and not having a support system in place, Lori Maisch went into action.

She looked at the American Diabetes Association, JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and local support groups.

"I found that there were great meetings for type 2 (diabetes), for children with type 1, but none specifically for adults with type 1," Maisch said.

So she formed a group called T1Tulsa for adults older than 18 living with type 1 diabetes. They meet once a month. Sometimes they have speakers; sometimes they just visit and learn from one another.

"It is a special meeting for me, as it is the one time month I can look around the room, say anything, and everyone gets it," she said.

If you're interested in T1Tulsa, email Maisch for meeting details, T1Tulsa@yahoo.com.

1956 Morris Isis Traveller ? Minority Morris ? 264 ? Classic cars

November 29th, 2012 by NZ Classic Car

I?generally pride myself on an ability to recognise old Kiwi classic cars, and can usually even remember the last time I actually spotted a particular marque and model, or recall having seen one in my younger days. Perhaps it was just me, I hope not, but I can vividly remember trying to name every car we passed or that came in the opposite direction whilst sitting in the back seat of my parent?s car when on outings during my early and teenage years. I attempted to be discreet (I didn?t want my folks to think I?d gone completely bonkers, just as my younger sister had suggested on many occasions) but nonetheless, it was something I enjoyed doing.

Recently, Choppers Auto Body Shop Ltd on Auckland?s North Shore advised us that it had just completed restoring a 1956 Morris Isis Traveller, and asked if we would like to feature it in NZ Classic Car magazine. The attached pictures of the Morris looked fine, so we decided to investigate further.

Getting back to my initial point, I have to admit that I couldn?t ever recall seeing a Morris Isis Traveller or, in fact, a Morris Isis sedan for that matter. I was totally familiar with its smaller brother, the Morris Oxford, but had the Isis eluded me for all these years? I think so. However, I didn?t feel so bad when I was advised that these cars are, indeed, quite rare and this beautifully restored example was described as probably?being the only one in the country ? so you can imagine my surprise when I spotted two of them sitting in the car park when we went to photograph the restored Isis car, both owned by long time Morris enthusiast, Terry Bracey.

I couldn?t wait to sit down with Terry to find out where the other car came from, and he advised me that he also thought his Isis Traveller was the only one in the country, that is until he found a second one.

Rare Beast

Terry was also unaware that Morris built the Isis Traveller until one day in the early 1980s he was driving his Morris Isis sedan (very much his trusty workhorse) when, to his astonishment, he spotted a Morris Isis Traveller coming the other way. Terry quickly performed a U-turn in hot pursuit of this rare beast, and after a few kilometres of horn beeping and light flashing the Traveller eventually pulled over. An old bloke hopped out and general conversation ensued, ending in Terry providing the owner of the Traveller with his name and contact details and the request to ring him if he ever wanted to sell.

A few years later, in fact August 1986, having completely forgotten this incident and with his Isis sedan off the road ? basically it was worn out after providing many years of reliable service ? Terry recalls receiving a phone call regarding a Morris Isis Traveller. Confusion reigned until the caller identified himself as the son of the owner of the Traveller. His father had passed away and, while cleaning out his dad?s papers, found Terry?s name and phone number as a possible buyer.

The Traveller was located just north of Auckland, in Orewa, and Terry wasted no time in arranging a suitable time to view the car. He was surprised to see that it had a current WoF and registration. Although well and truly worn, the Isis looked to be totally original and exactly what Terry wanted. Once a price had been negotiated and money changed hands, Terry drove the Traveller home with the intention of restoring it ? ?shortly.?

Now, as we all know, when it comes to classic cars ?shortly? can mean anything in terms of timing and, in Terry?s case, shortly turned out to mean 26?years later, in August 2009. His thought at that time was along the lines of ?if the job wasn?t done then it never will be? ? and he finally embarked on the task of restoring the Traveller.

However, there was one minor issue that Terry wanted to clear in his mind before starting the restoration, which was to verify the rarity of his Isis Traveller and, following a quick search on the internet, he could only find one example in the UK. Suitable inspiration, I would think, for a restoration project.

Steel, Aluminium and Wood

Chopper was introduced to Terry?s Morris Isis Traveller in 2010 and found himself looking at one very rusty bodyshell. Subsequently, Choppers Auto Body Shop was given the job of restoring this tired old vehicle back to its former glory.

The first stage was to completely strip every part, including every nut and bolt, from the car before Chopper could begin fabricating new panels?? these would include a full floor pan, inner and outer sills.

He then excised all the remaining rusty tin and had Warren at NZ Soda Blasting clean the remains with glass media.

The next step was to apply Resene Automotive two-part epoxy primer to seal the entire body before the long task of cutting, welding and fabricating could commence. Chopper spent many hours researching how the car was supposed to look, as obtaining body panels was definitely not an option so every individual panel that had to be replaced was meticulously crafted in the traditional method by hand, using an English wheel, shrinker-stretchers and metal folders.

Chopper even thought about the way in which he could prevent potential water leakage into areas that could cause further corrosion, and fabricated special fittings and hoses that came out of drain holes to force the water down and out of those areas.

Once the metalwork was finally completed, the next stage involved exhaustive weeks of fitting panels to get everything to line up perfectly, including a new rear section of roof which, Chopper pointed out, is made from aluminium and is half the size of the car, requiring many hours of special care and attention to detail it to perfection.

Once the bodyshell was completely coated in primer and assembled the next task was to tackle the woodwork. The responsibility for this aspect of the car?s restoration was handed over to cabinetmaker Steve Cleary, of SC Interiors. Steve quite literally hand-crafted each individual piece from a large block of American Ash. The task proved to be not only stressful but also incredibly time-consuming, as one-off templates were required for each piece to be made.

Final Assembly

Once the Traveller was back in Chopper?s workshop, he was able to carefully sand and prepare the woodwork before applying a natural-coloured stain followed by Resene Automotive Durapox clear. Once completely cured, the woodwork was re-sanded and re-cleared with a Dupont 3050s 2k clear, creating the magnificent finish you see here.

The car was then completely disassembled, prepped, seam-sealed and the Subaru Green Dupont basecoat and clear was applied to the shell and the rest of the parts.

Once painting was completed Chopper stripped every nut and bolt clean and had them gold-zinc plated. He was quite adamant that he wasn?t going to reuse any bolt or fastener that wasn?t new and greased. Chopper also installed Mongoose sound deadener to every part of the interior of the vehicle to give it the nice, quiet sound of a new car.

The Traveller was then treated to a complete application of cavity wax throughout ? including injecting it into every seam, tiny hole, crevice, nook and cranny to ensure the car would last a lifetime.

The fully rebuilt running gear from Carr Automotive was then reinstalled together with a rebuilt radiator thanks to Albany Radiators. Wills Automotive and Terry Gruebner Motors attended to general mechanical work and the Traveller was completely re-wired by Mike Barlow Electrical.

The car?s completely stripped, blasted and powder-coated suspension was re-installed, including a fully rebuilt rear end from The Italian Job, while Al?s Mufflers fabricated a new twin exhaust system, this being HPC coated. The bumpers, as well as the entire exterior brightwork, were re-chromed and polished. New rubbers and lights were fitted throughout.

The long road was almost at an end and the final piece in the jigsaw for Chopper was to pass the Traveller over to Jim Woonton in Mairangi Bay to complete the interior upholstery ? this being accomplished in a perfect tan shade to complement the Morris? green exterior and ash woodwork.

For Terry, there were still a few small hurdles to cross before he could safely and legally head off into the sunset in his newly restored Morris Isis Traveller. Unfortunately, he wasn?t aware of the need to have kept the car?s registration ?alive? back in 1986. Not a problem, he naively thought.

The Dead Hand of Bureaucracy

Terry?s first contact with NZTA established the need to re-register the Traveller, no problem. Then there was the issue that, although the vehicle was built in 1955, it was not registered in New Zealand until April 1956 as a used car. As such, in the eyes of NZTA this made the Isis a 1956 model and, to re-register the vehicle, it had to be repair- and seat belt?certified. Conflicting information from two different NZTA officials added to Terry?s utter frustration at this point, and his pleas that the vehicle already had seat belts and a current WoF when taken off the road fell on deaf ears.

Then the car had to be VINed, which amounted to a staggering all-up on-road cost of?$1470 ? and that was before a spanner was even laid on the vehicle.

By this stage, Terry was beginning to have second thoughts about attempting to wade any further through this discouraging sea of bureaucracy, and he came very close to finishing the rebuild and driving it without a WoF or registration. Terry figured his chances of being caught by the constabulary would be slim unless they had an interest in old cars and, as the Traveller would only be used for the equivalent of going down to feed the ducks on a fine Sunday, his chances of being caught were remote.

However, he decided to continue with the process of making his new pride and joy completely road legal, and admits the final kick in the pants came when he went to the AA to complete the registration. The contact person insisted that he had to physically sight Terry before contacting the NZTA ? Terry reckons it was probably to make sure that he wasn?t a six-eyed alien from Alpha Centauri or other such intergalactic place.

The good thing now is that it?s all behind him and he can enjoy the Traveller as intended ? and legally. He admits that he was fortunate in discovering four extremely talented individuals, three of whom have adjoining premises in Birkenhead, Auckland ? Choppers Auto Body Shop, NZ Soda Blasters and cabinetmaker, Steve Cleary. Upholsterer Jim Woonton wasn?t too far down the road in Mairangi Bay and, overall, Terry is very happy with the result.

Enter Murphy?s Law

No, I haven?t forgotten to tell you about the second Morris Isis Traveller we discovered in the car park.

Within two weeks of finishing the three-year rebuild and single-handedly attempting to lift Auckland?s economy out of recession, Terry was perusing the minutes of a recent meeting of the Auckland Morris Register and discovered a query from Christchurch regarding the possible sale of a 1956 Morris Isis Traveller. Terry couldn?t resist calling the club secretary for a name and phone number, and subsequently made the call. The person on the other end of the phone established that the Traveller was part of his stepfather?s estate and was a completely original, one-owner from-new vehicle. Photographs sent via email seemed to confirm this. The story was that this chap?s stepfather bought the Traveller brand new in Canada back in 1956 for C$2585, and when he emigrated to New Zealand in 1960 he brought?it with him and had it converted from left- to right-hand drive here in New Zealand.

So much for his car being the only one in the country, Terry thought.

Following an accusatory conversation with God, Terry flew down to Christchurch to inspect the ?original? Isis Traveller ? where he discovered it was exactly as promised. Absolutely original, the Isis came with a current WoF and registration, lots of spares and even a copy of the original bill of sale. Once a price was negotiated, Terry paid up and drove the Traveller back to Auckland without missing a beat. It ran very sweetly.

Terry plans to keep this second Traveller original, and intends tidying up a few areas here and there ? but no restoration is planned.

There you have it. There are now two Morris Isis Travellers in New Zealand according to Terry, and even the Auckland Morris Register?s historian believes these vehicles are extremely rare indeed. However, if you happen to know of another one lurking in the back of a barn somewhere, I think it best to keep it quiet as I think Terry has run out of garage space.

Johnson Development to Solicit Projects for 113-Acre Memphis ...

November 29, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor?

Johnson Development Associates has big plans for Aerotropolis Logistics?Park, the 113-acre site it acquired in Memphis, Tenn., earlier this year. The company is making the property available for as much as 1.2 million square feet of speculative development and build-to-suit opportunities and has tapped commercial real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. to spearhead the marketing effort.

Given the current state of the Memphis industrial market, it appears that JDA?s endeavor is kicking off at the right time. Demand for Class A accommodations continued to climb in the third quarter, driven to a great degree by healthcare, retail and third-party logistics companies, according to a report by JLL. For industrial tenants, the attractiveness of the Memphis market is undeniable, due in no small part to the very simple issue of practicality; affordable labor, low cost of living and relatively low industrial rental rates are reeling in renters.

And the attraction to Aerotropolis is likely to prove irresistible as well. The property, which will bloom on the former site of the Mall of Memphis, is not only located in the right city, it?s sited in the right area of the right city. Aerotropolis is within three miles of Memphis International Airport, the second largest cargo airport in the world, and just four miles away from the newly expanded BNSF Memphis Intermodal Facility. And then there?s the park?s close proximity to the Port of Memphis, which holds the distinction of being the fourth largest inland port in the U.S. Additionally, its immediate access to I-240 puts it within easy reach of the third-busiest trucking corridor in the country.

The call for large blocks of premier industrial space in Memphis has been growing louder, as noted in the JLL report. New Breed Logistics recently expanded its presence in Memphis by taking on 404,400 square feet at Southpark Distribution Center O. And in the absence of availability, some companies are creating additional elbowroom for themselves. In October, Nike Inc. revealed that it will invest $301 million in a project that will add 1.8 million square feet to its 1.1 million square-foot facility.

In the Memphis industrial real estate sector, bigger is better at the moment. ?There currently is a void in the market for Class A industrial product over 500,000 square feet,? Jack Wohrman, an associate broker with JLL, told Commercial Property Executive. ?The Memphis market currently has one existing Class A building over 500,000 square feet that is vacant and one under construction.? Worhman added that four spaces with more than 500,000 square feet of contiguous square footage have been occupied by new tenants to date in 2012. ?Consequently,? he added, ?tenant demand will likely outweigh supply in 2013, requiring more new construction.??

Aerotropolis certainly has its local backers. The City of Memphis contracted MAP Studio Planning and Policy Advisors for an assessment and the firm gave the project solid thumbs-up.

?We support the Aerotropolis [planned development] application because we believe that the JDA group will provide the right mix of project financing, sensitivity to land use issues, attraction of top-notch companies to the site, and commitment to urban revitalization,? Louise Mercuro, president of MAP Studio, wrote in a letter to the City Council.

Wired SKorea to stem digital addiction from age 3

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Park Jung-in, an 11-year-old South Korean, sleeps with her Android smartphone instead of a teddy bear. When the screen beams with a morning alarm, she wakes up, picks up her glasses and scrolls through tens of unread messages from friends, shaking off drowsiness.

Throughout the day, the gadget is in her hands whether she is in school, in the restroom or in the street as she constantly types messages to her friends. Every hour or so, she taps open an application in her phone to feed her digital hamster.

"I get nervous when the battery falls below 20 percent," Park said as she fiddled with the palm-size gadget. "I find it stressful to stay out of the wireless hotspot zone for too long."

In South Korea, where the government provides counseling programs and psychological treatment for an estimated 2 million people who cannot wean themselves from playing online computer games, youngsters such as Park have previously not been considered as potential addicts.

Here and in other parts of Asia, online addiction has long been associated with hardcore gamers who play online games for days on end, isolated from their school, work or family life and blurring the line between the real and fantasy online worlds. In a shocking 2010 case in South Korea, a 3-month-old girl died after being fed just once a day by her parents who were consumed with marathon online game sessions.

Park does not play computer games and in class, she confidently raises her hand to answer a question. She also gets along well with her friends and likes to cook as a hobby. And yet, she set off more than eight red flags on an addiction test, enough to be considered unhealthily dependent on her smartphone. Park is not unique and the government is concerned enough to make it mandatory for children as young as 3 to be schooled in controlling their device and Internet use.

Her obsession with being online is a byproduct of being reared in one of the world's most digitally connected societies where 98 percent of households have broadband Internet and nearly two thirds of people have a smartphone. Being wired is an icon of South Korea's pride in its state-directed transformation from economic backwater to one of Asia's most advanced and wealthy nations. Always seeking an edge, the government plans to digitize all textbooks from 2015 and base all schooling around tablet computers.

But some now fret about the effects that South Korea's digital utopia is having on its children, part of the first generation to play online games on smartphones, tablets and other devices even before they can read and write.

New mobile devices that instantly respond to a touch of a finger seem to make children more restless than before and lack empathy, said Kim Jun-hee, a kindergarten teacher who conducted an eight-month study on Internet safety and addiction education for pre-school children.

"Babies are in a stroller with a smartphone holder. Kids sit in the grocery shopping cart watching movies on the tablet computer," she said. "I've been teaching at kindergartens for more than 10 years now but compared to the past, kids these days are unable to control their impulses."

In Suwon city south of Seoul, students in teacher Han Jeoung-hee's classroom now turn in their smartphones when they arrive at school in the morning.

"Kids forgot to eat lunch, completely absorbed with smartphones and some stayed in the classroom during a PE class," said Han who teaches sixth grade students at Chilbo elementary school. Smartphones are put in a plastic basket and returned when kids leave for home after classes.

The National Information Society Agency, or NIA, estimates 160,000 South Korean children between age 5 and 9 are addicted to the Internet either through smartphones, tablet computers or personal computers. Such children appear animated when using gadgets but distracted and nervous when they are cut off from the devices and will forgo eating or going to the toilet so they can continue playing online, according to the agency.

Across the entire population, South Korea's government estimated 2.55 million people are addicted to smartphones, using the devices for 8 hours a day or more, in its first survey of smartphone addiction released earlier this year. Smartphone addicts find it difficult to live without their handsets and their constant use disrupts work and social life, according to NIA. Most of their personal interaction is carried out on the mobile handset. Overuse of smartphones may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as turtle neck syndrome caused by having the head in a constant forward position and a pain or numbness in fingers or wrists.

Though Internet addiction is not recognized as a mental illness, there is a growing call from medical practitioners and health officials worldwide to treat it as an illness rather than a social problem.

The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists Internet Use Disorder as meriting further study. It is unclear whether it will be recognized as a mental illness in a major revision of the standard-setting manual due out next year. But as the Internet becomes more pervasive and mobile, more societies are grappling with its downside. In Asia, countries that have experienced explosive growth in the Internet such as Taiwan, China and South Korea are most active in carrying out research into whether Internet addiction should be recognized as a mental illness, according to Lee Hae-kook, a psychiatry professor at Catholic University of Korea, College of Medicine.

South Korea already provides taxpayer-funded counselors for those who cannot control their online gaming or other Internet use. But the emergence of the smartphone as a mainstream, must-have device even for children is changing the government's focus to proactive measures from reactive.

South Korea's government is widening efforts to prevent Web and digital addiction in school-age children and preschoolers. Starting next year, South Korean children from the age 3 to 5 will be taught to protect themselves from overusing digital gadgets and the Internet.

Nearly 90 percent children from that age group will learn at kindergartens how to control their exposure to digital devices and the danger of staying online for long hours. The Ministry of Public Administration and Security is revising laws so that teaching the danger of Internet addiction becomes mandatory from pre-school institutions to high schools.

Kim, the kindergarten teacher, said educating children against digital and web addiction should start early because smartphones are their new toys.

From next year, her program for 3-year-olds will focus on introducing them to the positive activities they can do with the computers, such listening to music. Children aged 4 and 5, will learn the dangers of overuse and how to control their desire to use computers.

Programs also include making and learning the moves for "computer exercises" and singing songs with lyrics that instruct kids to close their eyes and stretch their bodies after playing computer games. They read fairy tales where a character falls prey to Internet addiction and learn alternative games they can play without computers or the Internet.

Kim said parents have to be involved in the education. One of the pledge cards written by a 5-year-old girl reads: "I promise to play Nintendo for 30 minutes only. Daddy promises to play less cellphone games and play more with me."

I was in Young and in love and even tough my Parents didn?t like my Husband for signs my Mother saw, We was willing to Elopement if they didn?t sign. We had planned to Marry a year later when I was able to Marry without My Parents Approval but than I found out that I was Pregnant. So We speed up the Marriage. Well even tough my Husband showed Me no signs of being abusive while dating and showed no Abusive or Disrespect towards Me or His Mother in front of Me; He became abusive once married. He raped me after 6 weeks after having Our first Child. I hadn?t had my 6 week check up yet with My Doctor so I didn?t have any Birth Control. By Me being His Wife He felt I didn?t have any right to say No to sex so I was Pregnant with Our second Child. My First Child & My Second Child are only 11 months apart! He tried to drowned Me while I bathe because I didn?t obey something He wanted Me to do at the time. I finally left Michael after Him jumping on Me one to many times! Once I left Him after of going back & forth to Him for years for the sake of my Kids, than came the Stalking, Threats & Attempts to Kill Me. I finally Divorced Michael after meeting my new boyfriend Neil who became Husband #2. He protected me from Michael and even tough He was an Alcoholic & We fought even before We got Married, I Married him anyway for the sake of My Third Child & My belief of having a Child out of Wedlock. Besides I thought If I Married him the Jealousy & Abuse would end! I married him after dating Him for more than 2 years off & on. I thought He was the Father to My Child. He told Me the Child was His & signed the Birth Certificated even after I told him to have a Blood test. I wanted to raise my kids with at least one of their Father! Me being of Christian values and all. The abuse got worse after Marriage or should I say stayed the same. I finally escaped from him too and filed for Divorce. Fearing he would kill me too because He Stalked Me & Attempted to kill Me more than once too. I filed Restraining Orders against Both Men. Each Husband spoke these words ?If I can?t have You Nobody Will?! Ladies Please! whenever a Man speak those words or similar words don?t doubt Him or take it for Granted! I ran from House to House looking for Safety for Me & My Kids! Constantly looking over my Shoulders and having Nightmares! Neil even started going to Church claiming he changed his ways. I wanted to believe Him because I wanted it to work that much and not wanting to fail at Marriage. We even starting attending Church together & He joined the Church. He asked Me to Re-marry Him after being Divorce for a Year. Soon after guess what? He stopped going to Church, Still drinking & the Abused started back again. It even started upon my oldest Child! So I Divorce Him a Second time. Because of those bad Relationships I opened up a Non-Profit Organization called ?Perfect Peace Inc.?. derived from the Scripture ?Thou will keep You in Perfect Peace all whose mind is stayed on Thee?. I also have an Inspiration CD out called ?Destiny? in which the title cut is dedicated to Domestic Violence Victims. I thank God today that I was able to get out of those Relationship Alive because as We all know some don?t! Well this is just a little bit of My testimony but I can right a Book on Domestic Violence, The Signs & Life after Domestic Violence. I hope My story Help Someone & God Bless You!
